Table 7 lists S-100-positive tumors and their positivity with additional markers. Myelin basic protein (MBP) (30) is a single-chain polypeptide associated with the central and peripheral nervous system. Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and neurofilament proteins (NFP) are intermediate filaments associated with glial cells and neural cells, respectively. HMB-45 is a mouse monoclonal antibody that reacts with an antigen present in premelanosomes. It is highly sensitive and specific for melanomas and certain nevi (junctional, congenital, blue nevi). EMA has been discussed in Section 3.1.3.1. [Pg.420]

Immunological studies showed the presence of antibodies to the rubella virus proteins and to the myelin basic protein. [Pg.2212]

In an experimental model of multiple sclerosis, repeated high doses of antigen (myelin basic protein) deleted both the clinical and pathological manifestations of the disease. The effects of Varicella vaccine on 50 patients with chronic progressive multiple sclerosis have therefore been studied (3). The patients were immunized with Varicella vaccine and followed for 1 year. All were seropositive for Varicella before immunization and all had rises in Varicella antibodies after being given the vaccine. There was improvement in 14 patients, 4 became worse, and 29 were unchanged. Four patients developed mild chickenpox after immunization. No other untoward adverse effects occurred. [Pg.3607]

The perineurial cells in neurofibroma contain EMA, which may be detected immunohistochemically in a small population of cells in these tumors. EMA may also be of some value in the diagnosis of nerve sheath myxoma because of the existence of perineurial elements around most tumor lobules. Nerve sheath neoplasms are occasionally labeled by antibodies to GFAP, as are 50% of soft tissue myoepitheliomas, whereas other benign soft tissue tumors are not. Myelin basic protein may also be of some value in the diagnosis of schwann-ian tumors, although there has been some disagreement in the literature on this point. [Pg.98]

Na channels spread outward from the nodes, lowering their nodal concentration. The cause of the disease is not known but appears to Involve either the body s production of auto-antlbodles (antibodies that bind to normal body proteins) that react with myelin basic protein or the secretion of proteases that destroy myelin proteins. Figure 3 Effect of hypoxia on p38 and p38y activity. PC12 cells were transfected with FLAG-tagged p38 isoforms and exposed to either normoxia (C, 21% O2) or hypoxia (H, 5% O2) for 6 hr. (a) Enzyme activity of various p38 isofoims was determined in immune complex kinase assays by determining the amount of 32p incorporated into myelin basic protein (mbp). (b) Whole-cell lysates were immunoblotted with antibody against the FLAG tag. Protein kinase activity of the various p38 isofoims after exposure to normoxia (black bars) or hypoxia (gray bars) is expressed as average percent of control SE (n = 6-9).
