Musty

Indole is a colodess solid, mp 52—54°C, which is leaddy soluble in most organic solvents but sparingly soluble in water. Indole has a musty odor which is very persistent and its derivatives have some apphcations in the formulation of fragrances. 

Odor. Except for highly carbonaceous species, most limestones are odorless. Quick and hydrated limes possess a mild odor that is characteristic but difficult to describe except that it is faintly musty or earthy, not offensive. 

Chemicals responsible for odor in some PUR foams were synthesised by polymerisation of PO in CH2CI2 with Bp2(C2H )20 catalyst (114). The yield was 25% volatile material and 75% polymeric material. The 25% fraction consisted of dimethyldioxane isomers, dioxolane isomers, DPG, TPG, crown ethers, tetramers, pentamers, etc, and 2-ethy1-4,7-dimethyl-1,3,6-trioxacane (acetal of DPG and propionaldehyde). The latter compound is mainly responsible for the musty odor found in some PUR foams. This material is not formed under basic conditions but probably arises during the workup when acidic clays are used for catalyst removal. 

Reversed-phase hplc has been used to separate PPG into its components using evaporative light scattering and uv detection of their 3,5-dinitroben2oyl derivatives. Acetonitrile—water or methanol—water mixtures effected the separation (175). Polymer glycols in PUR elastomers have been identified (176) by pyrolysis-gc. The pyrolysis was carried out at 600°C and produced a small amount of ethane, CO2, propane, and mostiy propylene, CO, and CH4. The species responsible for a musty odor present in some PUR foam was separated and identified by gc (Supelco SP-2100 capillary column)... 

The characteristic note of green beans is attributed to methoxypyrazines which have very low threshold values (10). The characteristic musty earthy note of robustas was recently identified as 2-methyhsobomeol [2371-42-8] (11).

Caseia and caseiaates must be stored carefliUy and evaluated for flavor before use ia products. Improperly manufactured or stored caseia—caseiaate has a very stroag, musty off-flavor. Excessive fat coateat, high lactose and moisture contents, and high storage temperatures contribute to undesirable flavor development.

Be mindful of all the cautions about using elder bark and roots (see page 7981) however, if you decide that you still want to harvest this part of the elder, collect in the fall of the second to fourth years. Musty and Nickless [353] used Amberlite XAD-4 for the extraction and recovery of chlorinated insecticides and PCBs from water.
