Multiple tasking General

Typically, lower-level tasks are procedural with low variability. However, higher-level tasks generally involve many information sources, complex processes and tools, and multiple agents with distributed and overlapping responsibilities. At higher levels, tasks increasingly require dynamic, nonlinear, flexible, or adaptive performance strategies and processes. [Pg.533]

The desired air—fuel volume ratio is usually seven or more, depending on the stoichiometry. Burners of this general type with many multiple ports are common for domestic furnaces, heaters, stoves, and for industrial use. The dame stabilizing ports in such burners are often round but may be slots of various shapes to conform to the heating task. [Pg.524]

A simpler and general discrete time scheduling formulation can also be derived by means of the Resource Task Network concept proposed by Pantelides [10], The major advantage of the RTN formulation over the STN counterpart arises in some problems involving many identical pieces of equipment. In these cases, the RTN formulation introduces a single binary variable instead of the multiple variables used by the STN model. The RTN-based model also covers all the features at the column on discrete time in Table 8.1. In order to deal with different types of resources in a uniform way, this approach requires only three different classes of constraints in terms ofthree types of variables defining the task allocation, the batch size, and the resource availability. Briefly, this model reduces the batch scheduling problem to a simple resource balance problem carried out in each predefined time period. [Pg.173]

Model validation requires confirming logic, assumptions, and behavior. These tasks involve comparison with historical input-output data, or data in the literature, comparison with pilot plant performance, and simulation. In general, data used in formulating a model should not be used to validate it if at all possible. Because model evaluation involves multiple criteria, it is helpful to find an expert opinion in the verification of models, that is, what do people think who know about the process being modeled ... [Pg.48]

Monitoring Because therapy generally extends over prolonged periods, perform complete blood counts and a sequential multiple analysis test every 6 months. Hazardous tasks Patients should use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. [Pg.1236]

In the oil and gas industry, the term abandonment generally refers to the activities undertaken to remove the structures used to sustain oil and gas production after the production is ceased. The structures range from a few tonnes of steel on the seabed to a complete platform constructed from around 30000 tonnes of steel framework. The task of removal requires extremely detailed and careful planning as well as substantial resources. Explosives are very efficient tools for cutting steel underwater and have been the preferred choice of many offshore operators for over 40 years. Also explosives offer the flexibility of a single controlled cut or multiple simultaneous cuts for remote and safe toppling of very large structures [129]. [Pg.64]

Process improvements may be conducted by the completion of a task or a project. A task is an activity that can be completed by the process owner with minimal cost and/or resources over a short period of time. A project is defined as temporary work to provide a product or service that is beyond the process owner s support. In general, a project requires more than one full-time equivalent (FTE), crosses over multiple functional organizations, and the duration of the effort spans over a longer period of time. Improvement status, updates, and issues should be discussed on a regular basis by a management forum or steering committee. Tasks and projects should be prioritized based on the risk against patient safety and efficacy and compliance. [Pg.282]

A recent theoretical study has suggested that persistent activity in the PFG is considered to be an attractor state, in that relatively small amounts of variation in this state lead it back to the same state. This idea has been examined in detail theoretically, especially by Amit, who described persistent activity in terms of dynamical attractors (Amit and Brunei, 1997 Rolls et al., 2008). The spontaneous state and stimulus-selective memory states are assumed to represent multiple attractors, such that a memory state can be switched on or off by transient inputs. This formulation is plausible, insomuch as stimulus-selective persistent firing patterns are dynamically stable in time. These properties of attractors result from interactions in neuronal circuits. Neural synchrony is a general mechanism for dynamically linking together cells coding task-relevant information (Salmas and Sejnowski, 2001). The dynamics of neuronal activities and the representations they reflect are two sides of a coin. [Pg.11]
