Straight WC—Co tools are not suitable for machining steels that produce long chips because straight grades undergo crater wear from diffusion of WC into the steel chip surface. However, soHd solutions of WC—TiC, WC—TiC—TaC, etc, resist this type of chemical attack. In addition, tantalum carbide can improve thermal-shock resistance. Steel cutting compositions thus typically contain WC—TiC—(Ta,Nb)C—Co. Tantalum carbide is often added as (Ta,Nb)C because the chemical similarity between TaC and NbC makes their separation expensive. [Pg.445]

Many of the more critical target structures in sabotage operations are made of steel. Plastic explosives are the best for steel cutting. They are easier to place and permit the use of a simple rule of thumb for determining the amount of explosive needed rather than working out a complicated mathematical formula. Also, if the proper techniques are used much less explosive is required to do the job than demolitions formulas call for. [Pg.24]

In general, improvised explosives are too complicated to prepare or too weak for steel cutting and most other sabotage tasks. However, if the problem is to get a quantity of lower velocity explosive for cratering or moving a large volume of earth or rock, a good simple one can be prepared from ammonium nitrate fertilizer. [Pg.32]

Use bench welding whenever possible (automatic). Field welding (manual) shall be kept to a minimum. Hand welding will be permitted only with approval on a case-by-case level. Rolled oats are the most common form of oats and are so called because the whole groats are steamed and then flattened between rollers before being made into flakes. Rolled oats are popularly called oatmeal. They are available in three thicknesses, and the thicker the flake, the longer the oats take to cook. Scotch or steel-cut oats are the thickest, and are sometimes called Scotch or Irish oatmeal. Table-cut or regular old-fashioned oats, sold in specialty stores, are nuttier and chewier than quick-cooking oats but are otherwise the same. Quick-cooking or instant oats are the thinnest flakes. Some people think they have a raw taste compared to other oats. [Pg.473]

Slender steel cutting tools, e.g. drills, would be strongly influenced by the high CVD temperature and would need a post heat treatment to receive useful properties. Because this post heat treatment causes distortion of slender steel cutting tools, they are normally PVD coated at lower temperatures without a post heat treatment. [Pg.436]

TNT (Trinitrotoluene) is produced from toluene,sulfuric acid, and nitric acid. It is a powerful high explosive with a velocity of detonation of about 21,000 feet per second. It is well suited for steel cutting, concrete breaching, and general demolition. [Pg.56]

To cut tubing, you will need a cut-off saw with a steel cutting blade as listed in the tool list, and V-blocks with clamps to hold the tubing tight while cutting. A hacksaw can be used to cut the tubing, or the pieces can be cut at a machine shop. [Pg.95]

Fuel bundles have been declad by transverse sawing with a hacksaw blade operated under water to provide cooling and prevent zircaloy fires. The preferred saw consists of a hardened tool-steel cutting edge welded to a tough-steel blade [H2]. More fines are produced than in shearing. [Pg.475]
