Multiple impacts

Some foam products are subjected to up to 10 major impacts in their lives, therefore a foam may need to be selected so that the performance is still adequate. Products, subjected to hundreds of thousands of impacts as in running shoe midsoles, were dealt with under fatigue. It appears that the higher density HDPE (419) and PP foams loose a significant amount of their protection after several impacts, but nevertheless it may be possible to use sufficient foam thickness to provide the required protection. If low density EVA foams are used, the impact energy densities are much lower, as the majority of the resistance is from compressing the cell gas. Details are given of the change in cell structure of a closecell foam due to multiple impacts and the range of application of cushion curves as they relate to reusable packaging. Cushion curves and stress-strain curves for up to 15 compressions were generated for three different moulded closed-cell PE foams.

The vibronic interactions have multiple impacts in various chemical and physical phenomena [1,2]. Especially, the vibronic paradigm is a natural key for the stereochemical problems, to which offers a general methodology and a set of meaningful parameters. 

The fractures on a plane surface, created by the collisions of hard spherical particles at low-impact velocities, may form a conical crack according to the Hertzian quasi-static stress theory. In a multiple-impact situation, the conical cracks meet those extending from neighboring impact sites, and then the brittle material becomes detached. Once appreciable damage is done, the cracking mechanism may be altered because the particles no longer strike on a plane surface nevertheless the brittle removal continues by the successive formation and intersection of cracks.

In this relation, Fm, the tangential momentum accommodation coefficient, is a function of the interaction between gas molecules and the surface. If the surface is smooth and reflects the molecules specularly, F , will be zero. For diffuse reflections F =l. This means that all the tangential momentum is lost at the wall. Diffuse reflection results from the penetration of the molecules into interstices in the surface where multiple impacts occur before the molecules depart.

In some instances the ball is dropped by allowing it to roll off an inclined track and is, therefore, rotating when it hits the sample. In the case of a no-fire, the ball bounces away from the block and only impacts the sample once, thus overcoming one of the inherent problems of multiple impacts produced by drop hammers. In other cases the ball is retained at the drop height and is released electromagnetically. The ease of sample testing, the low cost of the expendable... 

Linkages progress in many ways and instances. Many are catalyzed by ever widening capabilities of instrumental skills, exemplified by the study and use of nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. The joining of intellectual approaches and skills between disciplines will create major and basic advances such as to have multiple impacts on many branches of biomedical science. 

Although there are some biological evidences eg, in carcinogenesis, or in the formation of diseases, the environmental effects have far larger and multiple impact on human health than in countries with long ago established and adequate prevention policy. This is the reason why some surveys have more importance in Central and Eastern Europe and pear to be trivial for examination in the Western world. 

Societal risk is calculated to detemtine the likelihood of accidents involving multiple impacts. As shown in Figure 5.7, the F-N relationship is presented as a log-log plot with the x-axis representing the scale of the consequence in terms of N impacts and the y-axis representing F, the likelihood or expected frequency of N or more impacts. If available, an F-N curve can be plotted along with societal risk criteria for comparison, and to identify if risk reduction options need to be considered. 

Polyolefin foams are somewhat higher in cost than PS foams. They are also more flexible and better able to provide protection from multiple impacts. Typical densities are 16 to 32 kg/m (1 to 2 Ib/ft ). Polypropylene foams have somewhat greater rigidity than polyethylene foams. Polyolefin foams, like PS foams, are available in two varieties expanded (generally termed moldable) and extruded. PE/PS copolymer foams are also available, with characteristics generally intermediate between PS and PE foams, but with outstanding toughness. 

Table 2.1 shows some examples of hazards along with potential impacts. For simplicity only one impact is shown but often there are multiple impacts for a single hazard. 

Problem 6 According to Eq. (8.20), the density of polypropylene foam must be 59% higher than the density of polystyrene foam, to achieve the same yield stress. Other factors such as materials and processing costs will be important. It was noted that PP foam recovers more than EPS after impact. Therefore, EPP is preferred for multiple-impact helmets, but EPS is preferred for bicycle helmets (single impact, minimum weight). 

The case study for two merino wool apparel items showed for the first time the relative contributions of each phase in the full life cycle across multiple impact or resource use categories. In this assessment, socks and a long-sleeved T-shirt garment were produced from NZ merino wool, with processing and manufacture involving facilities in China, Mexico, Vietnam and the US for retail in the US or Europe. For the GWP impact using biophysical allocation, production on farm represented one-third to half of the life cycle GHG emissions, while processing was 30—35% of the total.
