The feedforward network shown in Figure 10.22 eonsists of a three neuron input layer, a two neuron output layer and a four neuron intermediate layer, ealled a hidden layer. Note that all neurons in a partieular layer are fully eonneeted to all neurons in the subsequent layer. This is generally ealled a fully eonneeted multilayer network, and there is no restrietion on the number of neurons in eaeh layer, and no restrietion on the number of hidden layers. [Pg.349]

Since these studies used local encoding schemes which utilized limited correlation information between residues, little or no improvement was shown by using a multilayered network with hidden units (Qian Sejnowski, 1988 Stolorz et al., 1992 Fariselli et air, 1993). The two main categories of NN architectures are feedforward and feedback networks. Feedforward (or multilayer) networks consist of several interconnected layers I of neurons (Figure 9.1). The last layer L is called the output or visible layer, and the others are called the hidden layers. The number of neurons A, per hidden layer depends on the problem considered and is usually specified by trial and error that is, the more difficult the problem, the larger the required sizes of the hidden layers. Feedback networks consist of N neurons, with the output of each individual neuron being fed back to all others via weights w j.
