In addition to ARSAC approval, the protocol must also be approved by ethics committees in the normal manner for studies in man. Fecal Monitoring Method. The subjects were instructed to bring their stool samples back to the metabolic unit as soon as was possible after collection. Each sample was carefully labelled with time, date, and subject identification, and was placed in a freezer in the metabolic unit. The samples were freeze-dried, and allowed to equilibrat for 24 hours under ambient conditions. The dry weights of the samples were taken, and the samples were powdered and mixed thoroughly to provide homogeneous portions for analysis. [Pg.117]

When possible, quantitative analyses are best conducted using external standards. Emission intensity, however, is affected significantly by many parameters, including the temperature of the excitation source and the efficiency of atomization. An increase in temperature of 10 K, for example, results in a 4% change in the fraction of Na atoms present in the 3p excited state. The method of internal standards can be used when variations in source parameters are difficult to control. In this case an internal standard is selected that has an emission line close to that of the analyte to compensate for changes in the temperature of the excitation source. In addition, the internal standard should be subject to the same chemical interferences to compensate for changes in atomization efficiency. To accurately compensate for these errors, the analyte and internal standard emission lines must be monitored simultaneously. The method of standard additions also can be used. [Pg.438]

Free- Vibration Methods. Free-vibration instmments subject a specimen to a displacement and allow it to vibrate freely. The oscillations are monitored for frequency and damping characteristics as they disappear. The displacement is repeated again and again as the specimen is heated or cooled. The method used to develop the emission inventory does have some elements of error, but the other two alternatives are expensive and subject to their own errors. Other methods for ICP monitoring include Camino ICP monitors, which are positioned into the brain parenchyma, but do not transverse the hemisphere nearly to the degree that EVDs do, and are associated with a lower risk of intracerebral hemorrhage. The ICP is measured by a fiberoptic transducer at the tip of the cathe-ter. ° ICP monitors, however, are subject to inaccuracy over time, so-called drift, and thus may become less reliable after the first few days post-insertion. Epidural and subarachnoid bolts/catheters are the least invasive, placed external to or just within the dura, thereby carrying a much lower risk of hemorrhage and infection, but with unfortunately compromised accuracy. [Pg.186]
