Prototype Molds

Testing of sample plaques of the materials used, which have had the physicals predicted by the CAD analysis, will indicate the extent of the changes from the bulk material properties. Tests of molded prototypes should be done to verify designs for components that, by their configuration, would be susceptible to high levels of orientation. [Pg.233]

Whereas aluminum and zinc alloys or low-hardness steels can be used for small-series molds (prototypes and pre-series), the processing of SMC to serial parts is done in heated steel molds. [Pg.96]

There are two general categories of molds. Prototype molds are used to produce a few to a hundred products. These molds are generally made of easily worked materials, such as plaster, wood, and even paper. Production molds are used for long production runs. [Pg.363]

A prototype is a 3-D model suitable for use in the preliminary testing and evaluation of a product (also used for modeling a die, mold and other tool). It provides a means to evaluate the product s performances before going into production. The ideal situation is for the prototype to be the actual product made in production. However machining stock material and using rapid prototype techniques can make prototypes (Chapter 4, BOOK SHELVES). [Pg.178]

Methods are used to produce the more costly rapid prototypes include those that produce models within a few hours. They include photopolymerization, laser tooling, and their modifications. The laser sintering process uses powdered TP rather than chemically reactive liquid photopolymer used in stereolithography. Models are usually made from certain types of plastics. Also used in the different processes are metals (steel, hard alloys, copper-based alloys, and powdered metals). With powder metal molds, they can be used as inserts in a mold ready to produce prototype products. These systems enable having precise control over the process and constructing products with complex geometries. [Pg.178]

Next is to make sample prototype tooling and sample prototype products for the test. Samples made by machining or other simplified model making techniques do not have the same properties as the product made by molding or extrusion or whatever process is to be used (Chapter 3, PROTOTYPES). A product made this way is a sample rather than a testable prototype. Simplified prototypes may reduce trial mold cost and produce adequate test data in some cases. Its main value is appearance and feel to determine whether the aesthetics are correct. Any testing has to be done with considerable reservation and caution. [Pg.206]

It would be desirable to make sample prototype tooling and analyze the flow effects on a product that is likely to present a flow problem. In addition to the usual physical testing of the product, the use of photo-stress analysis techniques plus the exposure to selected solvents to check for stress crack characteristics would lead to changes in the product to minimize the effects of the molding on the product performance. As an example there have been cases in the past where piano keys with frozen-in stresses have been released from perspiration, leaving open flow lines (Chapter 5, STRESS ANALYSIS). [Pg.280]

Tolerance Where very close tolerances are involved, preparing a prototype of the full size product may be necessary to establish critical dimensions. If this step is not practi-tal, it may be necessary to test a mold or die during various stages of cavity or die opening manufacture with allowances for correction in order to determine the exact shrinkage needed. [Pg.308]

Prototyping basically provides a 3-D model suitable for use in the preliminary evaluation of form, design, performance, and material processing of products, molds, dies, etc. When properly used this automatic/fast system can accelerate product development, improve product quality, and time to the market for a product. [Pg.447]

These cutting operations are usually used only for machined prototypes, or very low volume production of simple shapes. High speed routing is sometimes used for slotting or gate removal on injection molded products. Standard end mills (two-flute), cir-... [Pg.537]

The release behavior depends on both the choice of polymer and on the formulation procedure. The best results were obtained with injection-molded samples. For prototypical drugs like p-nitroaniline, the drug release pattern followed closely that of the polymer degradation over a period of 9 months for PCPP. The correlation between release and degradation was still maintained in the more hydrophilic PCPP-SA, 20 80, where both processes were completed in 2 weeks. Compression molding can also be used for these polymers, but the correlation between drug release and polymer degradation is not as... [Pg.49]

The cephalosporins, discovered in the 1950s, are produced by various species of the mold Cephalosporium. Cephalosporin C (9.46) is the prototype of these antibiotics, and its structure shows a close similarity to the penam stmcture. The 5-thia-l-azabicyclo[4.2.0] octane ring system is therefore called the cepham ring. The parent compound carries the aminoadipate side chain, which can be cleaved to supply the 7-amino-cephalosporanic acid. This amine can easily be acylated and thus forms the basis of many useful derivatives. The 3-acetoxymethyl substiment is also amenable to modifications. [Pg.567]

Because of the nature of their activity, market development must work closely with the applications laboratory. Applications is a group of specialists who develop detailed technical information on the properties of the new plastic raw material. They determine the functional suitability of the plastic part after it has been produced from the customer s mold or of the prototype part built by the lab group. This testing of course, includes the usual chemical and mechanical analysis as well as environmental testing under the conditions in which the customer intends to use the part. [Pg.103]
