Manufacturing Considerations

Potential health and safety problems of acryflc polymers occur in their manufacture (159). During manufacture, considerable care is exercised to reduce the potential for violent polymerizations and to reduce exposure to flammable and potentially toxic monomers and solvents. Recent environmental legislation governing air quality has resulted in completely closed ketde processes for most acryflc polymerizations. Acryflc solution polymers are treated as flammable mixtures. Dispersion polymers are nonflammable. [Pg.171]

Typical compositions of polymeric GMs are depicted in Table 26.3. As the table shows, the membranes contain various admixtures such as oils and fillers that are added to aid the manufacturing of the FML but may affect future performance. In addition, many polymer FMLs will cure once installed, and the strength and elongation characteristics of certain FMLs will change with time. It is important therefore to select polymers for FML construction with care. Chemical compatibility, manufacturing considerations, stress-strain characteristics, survivability, and permeability are some of the key issues that must be considered. [Pg.1119]

By the late 1950s the transistor, and devices such as magnetic core storage systems, made it possible to manufacture considerably faster and smaller mainframe computers. The late 1960s saw the introduction of integrated circuits making it possible for many transistors to be fabricated on one silicon substrate. The microprocessor, and random access... [Pg.6]

A dished bottom requires less power than a flat one. When a single impeller is to be used, a liquid level equal to the diameter is optimum, with the impeller located at the center for an all-liquid system. Economic and manufacturing considerations, however, often dictate higher ratios of depth to diameter. [Pg.287]

The shielding blanket is composed of water-cooled steel modules, which are directly supported by the vacuum vessel and are effective in moderating the 14MeV neutrons, with a water-cooled copper mat bonded to the surface of the modules on the plasma side, and protected from interaction with the plasma by beryllium. Manufacturing considerations can be found elsewhere [48]. The first wall incorporates two start-up limiters located in two equatorial ports. With the aim to reduce cost and nuclear waste, the design includes a modular and separable first wall. This allows damaged or eroded blanket modules to be repaired inside the hot cell either by replacement of panels or by plasma spraying or other methods. [Pg.291]

The substitution of the liquid electrolyte with the less reactive polymer electrolyte has led to lithium-polymer batteries, among the most likely to be commercialized for electric vehicles [89]. It must be stressed that the lithium-polymer battery is still a lithium-metal battery and not a lithium-ion one. Lithium-polymer batteries are solid-state, in that their electrolyte is a solid. A great safety advantage of this type of battery is that the electrolyte will not leak out if there is a rupture in the battery case. Furthermore, it can be assembled in any size and shape, allowing manufacturers considerable flexibility in cell design for electric vehicle or electronic equipment. [Pg.3850]

Years ago powders were used as dosage forms more frequently before the advent of more modern forms. However, biopharmaceutical problems arose with these new drug dosage forms, and companies have returned to powders and developed these further. Industrial sachet manufacturing considerably reduces handling and improves storage. Pressurized systems allow easy dispensation of disinfectants, which increases patients compliance. It can be expected that powders will continue to be used in the future. [Pg.2981]

Plutonium is usually precipitated in reprocessing plants as its oxalate, which is converted into plutonium(lV) oxide from which mixed oxide fuel elements for light-water reactors or fast breeder reactors can be manufactured. Considerable knowledge over the manufacture of mixed oxide fuel elements has been built up over the years in the USA, France, Great Britain, Japan, Belgium and the Federal Republic of Germany. Thus up to the end of 1993, just in the Federal Republic of Germany, 4.5t of fissile... [Pg.620]

Construction.—Runners of reaction turbines are of cast iron, bronze, cast steel and composite of plate steel in cast hubs. The material used is determined chiefly by manufacturing considerations. Thrust bearings for horizontal units are of the plain collar type. For vertical turbines, ball, roller or oil-pressure (step) bearings are commonly used. Impulse turbine buckets are of bronze, cast iron or cast steel cast iron being used only for the lower heads. Nozzles are cast iron or cast steel, usually with removable bronze tips and steel needles. Interior surfaces should be polished smooth. The housing is usually cast iron, sometimes with steel-plate covers. [Pg.72]

A variety of factors determine whether an adsorbent will be useful as desiccants. These factors include cost, long-term stability, moisture removal characteristics (rate, capacity, saturation conditions, and suitable temperatures), regeneration requirements (rate of moisture surrender as a function of temperature and humidity), availability, and manufacturing considerations. [Pg.619]
