Molds corrosion resistant

The industrial value of furfuryl alcohol is a consequence of its low viscosity, high reactivity, and the outstanding chemical, mechanical, and thermal properties of its polymers, corrosion resistance, nonburning, low smoke emission, and exceUent char formation. The reactivity profile of furfuryl alcohol and resins is such that final curing can take place at ambient temperature with strong acids or at elevated temperature with latent acids. Major markets for furfuryl alcohol resins include the production of cores and molds for casting metals, corrosion-resistant fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs), binders for refractories and corrosion-resistant cements and mortars. [Pg.80]

As a tme thermoplastic, FEP copolymer can be melt-processed by extmsion and compression, injection, and blow molding. Films can be heat-bonded and sealed, vacuum-formed, and laminated to various substrates. Chemical inertness and corrosion resistance make FEP highly suitable for chemical services its dielectric and insulating properties favor it for electrical and electronic service and its low frictional properties, mechanical toughness, thermal stabiUty, and nonstick quaUty make it highly suitable for bearings and seals, high temperature components, and nonstick surfaces. [Pg.358]

The metal parts of the injection molder, ie, the liner, torpedo, and nozzle, that contact the hot molten resin must be of the noncatalytic type to prevent accelerated decomposition of the polymer. In addition, they must be resistant to corrosion by HCl. Iron, copper, and zinc are catalytic to the decomposition and caimot be used, even as components of alloys. Magnesium is noncatalytic but is subject to corrosive attack, as is chromium when used as plating. Nickel alloys such as Duranickel, HasteUoy B, and HasteUoy C are recommended as constmction materials for injection-molding metal parts. These and pure nickel are noncatalytic and corrosion-resistant however, pure nickel is rather soft and is not recommended. [Pg.440]

Alumina—graphite refractories, almost all continuous casting ware, have come into much greater use as continuous casting has spread in steelmaking. These refractories are used in shrouds that conduct the molten metal from the ladle to the tundish, in the subentry tubes that take the metal from the tundish to the mold, in isostatically pressed stopper rods, and in shroud tubes for slab and bloom casters. The alumina—graphite compositions are used in these products because of the thermal-shock resistance and corrosion resistance they impart to the product. [Pg.577]

For resistance against fatigue, Nimonic 75 has been used with Nimonic 80 and Nimonic 90. Nimonic 75 is an 80-20 nickel-chromium alloy stiffened with a small amount of titanium carbide. Nimonic 75 has excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures, a reasonable creep strength, and good fatigue resistance. In addition, it is easy to press, draw, and mold. As firing temperatures have increased in the newer gas turbine models, HA-188, a Cr, Ni-based alloy, has recently been employed in the latter section of some combustion liners for improved creep rupture strength. [Pg.384]

Molding applications dominate the market of phenolic resins. Articles produced by injection molding have outstanding heat resistance and dimensional stability. Compression-molded glass-filled phenolic disk brake pistons are replacing the steel ones in many automobiles because of their light weight and corrosion resistance. [Pg.348]

Resistance strength, cost strength, cost with the mechanical integrity of the polymer and often require reinforcement to salvage strength. They also narrow the molding latitude of the base resin. Some can cause mold corrosion. [Pg.350]

Unsaturated polyester resins have gained market share from metals because they are lightweight, corrosion resistant, and can be molded into complex shapes,... [Pg.711]

PTFE is produced by the free radical polymerization process. While it has outstanding thermal and corrosive resistance, it is a marginal engineering material because it is not easily machinable. PTFE has low tensile strength, resistance to wear, and low creep resistance. Molding powders are processed by press and sinter methods used in powder metallurgy. It can also be extruded using ram extruder techniques. [Pg.190]
