Arable farmers in the UK rarely grow more than one crop in a year, but horticulturalists may grow two or more crops in a year on the same soil, so the question of crop sequences is more intense for them, particularly as Brassica vegetables, such as cabbages and brussel sprouts, can leave large organic as well as mineral nitrogen residues.

Being on-farm emissions (from cultivation and animals breeding) the most important source of GHG in food life cycle, numerous studies have tried to reduce them. Ahlgren [55] has used LCA to evaluate the use of biofuels in tractors and the substitution of mineral nitrogen fertilizers. This implied that 3-6% of a farm s available land was needed to produce the required biomass (to produce biofuels and fertilizer).

Marsh et al. [47] have described an apparatus based on an autoanalyser system for the automatic preparation of soil extracts for mineral nitrogen determination. It consists of a reagent adder, which adds the correct volume of extractant for an approximately weighed amount of soil, and a sample preparation unit, which mixes, filters, dilutes and loads samples on to an autoanalyser sampler. A labour saving of 60% is achieved in this method compared to manual method. Examples are given of the determination of nitrate plus nitrate nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen. 

Presolar stardust discovered to date in meteorites constitute no more than 0.5%o of the total mass of the samples, and one common chemical property is that they are acid resistant. Isotopic heterogeneity could also be present in less refractory phases like silicates, provided parent body metamorphism did not erase the differences. Noble gases are not discussed here because they are depleted by many orders of magnitude relative to the Sun and can be dominated by trace exotic minerals.
