Some microorganisms can catalyze certain oxido-reduction reactions like the oxidation of iron and manganese in water, the oxidation of sulfur compounds, and oxidation-reduction of nitrogen compounds. Aerobic autotrophic bacteria of the type Thiobacillus can release soluble iron, copper, and sulfuric acid as sulphates into water. These organisms can be found everywhere in nature wherever an acidic environment is maintained in the presence of sulfide-containing minerals. 

Another factor responsible for the observed variability in positive results may be adsorption of ammonium and other nitrogen compounds onto humic substances (the main photoreactive fraction of DOM). Hence, detection of photoammonification may to some extent reflect photochemicaUy induced desorption of ammonium from large organic molecules, rather than the mineralization of organic nitrogen. This phenomenon, however, would be limited to fresh and low salinity waters, since at higher salinities ammonium ions are replaced by cationic macroconstituents of seawater. 

The chemical composition of honey (Table 2.3) is dominated by glucose and fructose. Honey also contains many other valuable components, like enzymes, organic acids, mineral elements, nonprotein nitrogenous compounds, vitamins, aroma substances, and pigments. 

Urine is an aqueous solution of inorganic and organic compounds including mineral substances, nitrogen compounds from protein metabolism, as well as of non-protein nitrogen compounds, vitamins, hormones and enzymes. 

The earliest studies of this kind seem to be those of Cooper (1935) and Von Brand et al. (1937). The amount of phytoplankton, zooplankton or mixed plankton they incubated in experimental bottles filled with water almost corresponded to that of organic P and N in the sea. The experiments ware carried out under dark, aerobic conditions for periods of 3—5 weeks, the temperature being 15—19°C and 20—25°C, respectively. The amounts of phosphates and mineral nitrogenous compounds accumulated exceeded the oi anic P and N supplied by the zooplankton.
