Utilization maximization

To be a utilitarian implies in the economic area that individual decisions are being made so as to provide as much utility for the individual as possible. The idea is then that the sum of utility-maximizing individuals leads to a maximum welfare for society. The overall idea is that the sum of the decisions taken will maximize society s welfare. 

As we have pointed out in this chapter current economic methods and background assumptions leave room for substantial improvements. And improvements are being made in all areas, although it takes time for these improvements to enter into the applied versions of economic analysis. But larger attention is definitely needed for analysis based on other assumptions than utility-maximizing behaviour where the preferences are complete and stable and where all actors on the market have perfect knowledge. 

If sponsors had perfect information, it would be easy to set rewards. McGuire has shown that the optimum reward is, in principle, solvable as a utility maximization problem (McGuire 2003 Institute of Medicine 2004). However, McGuire s proof assumes that the R D production function is known to second order. In fact, the values (and even the sign) of these coefficients are very uncertain and depend on information that is not public knowledge (Sloan and Easley, Chapter 6). ...

Under Hanemann s (1984, 1989) well known linkage between random utility maximization and the functional form of econometric models with a binary dependent variable, a logit model has been estimated on SB-CVM data. A second theory simply proposes that unions act instrumentally as utility maximizers for the entire bargaining unit their goal is to maximize either utility per worker or the total utility of the workforce, depending on how they approach it. Our work so far assumes that both the supplier and the retailer in the supply chain adopt the satisficing objectives. However, there are other types of objectives formanagers and/orcompanies in business practice. These objectives include expected profit maximization (EPM), expected utility maximization, and expectedprofit maximization subjectto downside-risk constraint (Gan et al., 2005). Note that Acme used the approach to develop enable activities. These include Activity Costing, Consistent Measures, Master Planning, Utilization Maximization, and Process Reengineering.
