Goto et al. (2004) measured the reaction kinetics of one-electron oxidation of A -methyl-p-anisidine in AN. In the electrode process, oxidation was performed at the platinum disk-shaped anode, in the chemical process, by means of the tris(p-bromophenyl)amine cation-radical. In both the cases, after one-electron oxidation, dimerization took place leading to the formation of the dye variamine blue. According to the kinetic data, the mechanism of this dye formation is different in the electrode and chemical processes (see Scheme 2.34). Namely, in the electrode oxidation, the cation-radical appears to be surrounded by a huge amount of the initial (nonoxidized) A-methyl-p-anisidine... [Pg.114]

The same author [63] reported the synthesis of 1 (3-methylcarbapenem intermediates such as 111 (Scheme 16), employing chiral imines prepared from (S)-methyl 3-hydroxy-2-methylpropionaldehyde and p-anisidine or DAM-NH2. The reaction of diketene 98 with these imines in the presence of imidazole produced a diastereomeric mixture of P-lactams 107 and 108 in a variable ratio. These authors found that the best results in terms of chemical yield and stereoselectivity could be obtained when the [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction was performed on imines derived from DAM-NH2 toluene as solvent and using 4-methylimidazole instead of imidazole. Under these conditions the P-lactam 108b was obtained in 49% yield and the ratio of isomers 107b/108b was 1 15. [Pg.579]

The acidic periodate oxidations of p-anisidine to 4-methoxy-l,2-benzoquinone, A,Al-diethyl-m-toluidine to methyl-1,4-benzoquinone, Mn(II)-catalysed oxidation of Al-methyl aniline to p-benzoquinone, and 3-chloro-2-methylaniline to 2-chloro-3-methyl-l,4-benzoquinone were studied in acetone/water medium. The reactions were first order in 104 and substrates, the rates increased with increasing ionic strength and dielectric constant, and the plot of 1/ 2 versus [H+] passed through a minimum. [Pg.131]

The reducing methylated sugars are detected by the same reagents used for paper chromatograms such as aniline phthalate (No. 10), p-anisidine phthalate (No. 12), 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (No. 255), alkaline silver nitrate (No. 234) and, in addition, the sulfuric acid sprays and iodine vapor. Brief exposure to iodine vapor does not cause a detectable destruction of the methyl ethers of the sugars [83] and is therefore a convenient method for visualizing the components on preparative plates [73] or for quantitative analysis. [Pg.830]
