Metallic coatings electrical equipment

Cadmium is widely used in industry for metal coating, pigments and paints, batteries, and in solder alloys. Its principal use is in the production of nickel-cadmium batteries required for portable electronic and electrical equipments. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the total world refinery production in 1997 rose to 19,500 tons from 18,900 tons a year.

Today, powder coating is widely accepted, with thousands of installations in the factories of original equipment manufacturers (OEMS) and custom coating job shops. It is the preferred method for coating many familiar items such as lawn and garden equipment, patio and other metal furniture, electrical cabinets, lighting, shelving and store fixtures, and many automotive components. 

In the first part of the twentieth century, beryhium was used as coating inside fluorescent electric hght tubes, but proved carcinogenic (causes cancer) when broken tubes produced beryllium dust that was inhaled. Because of this potential to cause cancer, since 1949 berylhum has no longer been used as the inside coating of fluorescent tubes. Beryllium is also used for computer parts, electrical instrument components, and solid propellant rocket fuels. Because it is one of the few metals that is transparent to X-rays, it is used to make special glass for X-ray equipment. 

A special piece of equipment, known as the holiday detector, is a hoop of metal placed around the pipe after it is coated and wrapped. A small electrical current flows through the hoop, If there is a holiday. i.e., a spot where there is no coating, the detector alerts tine operator. This is brought to the attention of a special crew that coats and waps bare spots in tile pipe.
