The highest G-ratios are obtained when grinding with straight oil coolants. Such oils reduce power, increase maximum depth of cut, and produce smoother finishes. Disadvantages include inabiUty to remove heat from the work, oil mist in the work area, fire hazard, and tendency to hold grinding swarf (fine metal chips and abrasive particles produced in the grinding process) in suspension. Sir Humphry Davy attempted to isolate this unidentified element through electrolysis—but failed. It was not until 1824 that Jons Jakob Berzehus (1779—1848), who had earlier discovered cerium, osmium, and iridium, became the first person to separate the element silicon from its compound molecule and then identify it as a new element. Berzehus did this by a two-step process that basically involved heating potassium metal chips with a form of silica (SiF = silicon tetrafluoride) and then separating the resulting mixture of potassium fluoride and silica (SiF + 4K —> 4KF + Si). Plutonium is so toxic that processing and fabrication are always done in sealed cells or glove boxes, but accidental dispersions of aerosol occur from time to time. Following combustion of Pu metal chips in a production area at Rocky Flats, Colorado, in 1964, airborne contamination was widespread. Alpha tracks from individual particles caught on membrane filters were detected on nuclear film, and the Pu content, and hence the particle size, was deduced (Fig. 5.2, curve E).
