Plants are the base of the terrestrial food chain. The body tissue of herbivores feeding on these plants, and subsequently of omnivores and carnivores, is dependent on the isotopic composition of the plant material ingested, and therefore reflects the 813C values of either a C3 or C4 biome. The exact values are modified by metabolically induced fractionation as the food is digested and incorporated into different body tissues. At its simplest, it has been assumed... [Pg.354]

Thus, fetal liver from primates has a more well-developed metabolic system for xenobiotics than does that from rodents and rabbits, for example. This may be due to the late development of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum and therefore of cytochrome(s) P-450 in the latter species. The use of metabolic inducers and inhibitors in vivo and the use of metabolizing systems with embryo or limb bud culture in vitro have all indicated that for some teratogens,... [Pg.246]

The major change in yeast metabolism induced by casamino acids supplementation was the marked increase in xylitol production, being the major metabolic product by D. hansenii grown in supplemented concentrated medium (Fig. 2B). Both arabitol and xylitol production in yeast are described to be augmented under stress conditions. Arabitol is usually found as a product of arabinose metabolism in oxygen-limited conditions (8,22), but arabitol production is not restricted to arabinose metabolism,... [Pg.1054]

A variety of responses can be initiated by the direct interaction of metals with cellular components. Membrane damage and enzyme inhibition are examples of such a metal effect. Above a certain threshold concentration of metals in the cell, its physiological state is irreversibly changed (Van Assche et al., 1988). This response is reflected by an increase in capacity (activity under non-limiting substrate and coenzyme concentrations) of certain enzymes. This increase in capacity is generally called enzyme induction. These secondary, indirect effects of metals are considered to play an important role in the stress metabolism induced by toxic metal concentrations. [Pg.161]
