Hydrophobicity plots of AQPs indicated that these proteins consist of six transmembrane a-helices (Hl-H6 in Fig. la) connected by five connecting loops (A-E), and flanked by cytosolic N- and C-termini. The second half of the molecule is an evolutionary duplicate and inverse orientation of the first half of the molecule. Loops B and E of the channel bend into the membrane with an a-helical conformation (HB, HE in Fig. lb) and meet and each other at their so-called Asn-Pro-Ala (NPA) boxes. These NPA motifs are the hallmark of AQPs and form the actual selective pore of the channel, as at this location, the diameter is of that of a water molecule (3 A Fig. la and b). Based on the narrowing of the channel from both membrane sides to this small... [Pg.214]

The titanosilicate version of UTD-1 has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the oxidation of alkanes, alkenes, and alcohols (77-79) by using peroxides as the oxidant. The large pores of Ti-UTD-1 readily accommodate large molecules such as 2,6-di-ferf-butylphenol (2,6-DTBP). The bulky 2,6-DTBP substrate can be converted to the corresponding quinone with activity and selectivity comparable to the mesoporous catalysts Ti-MCM-41 and Ti-HMS (80), where HMS = hexagonal mesoporous silica. Both Ti-UTD-1 and UTD-1 have also been prepared as oriented thin films via a laser ablation technique (81-85). Continuous UTD-1 membranes with the channels oriented normal to the substrate surface have been employed in a catalytic oxidation-separation process (82). At room temperature, a cyclohexene-ferf-butylhydroperoxide was passed through the membrane and epoxidation products were trapped on the down stream side. The UTD-1 membranes supported on metal frits have also been evaluated for the separation of linear paraffins and aromatics (83). In a model separation of n-hexane and toluene, enhanced permeation of the linear alkane was observed. Oriented UTD-1 films have also been evenly coated on small 3D objects such as glass and metal beads (84, 85). [Pg.234]

Another significant component of many liposome preparations is cholesterol. In natural cell membranes, cholesterol makes up about 10—50% of the total lipid on a molar basis. For liposome preparation, it is typical to include a molar ratio of about 50% cholesterol in the total lipid recipe. The addition of cholesterol to phospholipid bilayers alters the properties of the resultant membrane in important ways. As it dissolves in the membrane, cholesterol orients itself with its polar hydroxyl group pointed toward the aqueous outer environment, approximately even, in a three-dimensional sense, with the glyceryl backbone of the bilayer s phosphodiglyceride components (Fig. 337). Structurally, cholesterol is a rigid component in membrane construction, not having the same freedom of movement that the fatty acid tails of... [Pg.557]

Recently, some membrane manufacturers have attempted to produce anisotropic microfiltration membranes in which the open microporous support is a built-in prefilter. Unlike most other applications of anisotropic membranes, these membranes are oriented with the coarse, relatively open pores facing the feed solution, and the most finely microporous layer is at the bottom of the membrane. The goal is to increase filter life by distributing the particle load more evenly across the filter than would be the case with an isotropic porous membrane. [Pg.291]
