Membranes membrane unit

Adsorption systems employing molecular sieves are available for feed gases having low acid gas concentrations. Another option is based on the use of polymeric, semipermeable membranes which rely on the higher solubiHties and diffusion rates of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide in the polymeric material relative to methane for membrane selectivity and separation of the various constituents. Membrane units have been designed that are effective at small and medium flow rates for the bulk removal of carbon dioxide. [Pg.172]

Like normal filtration, with ultrafiltration (UF), a feed emulsion is introduced into and pumped through a membrane unit water and some dissolved low molecular weight materials pass through the membrane under an applied hydrostatic pressure. In contrast to ordinary filtration however, there is no build-up of retained materials on the membrane filter. [Pg.345]

Hollow fiber modules, or permeators, are precisely machined units containing bundles of fine hollow fibers, positioned parallel to and around a perforated center FW tube, with only one or two bundles per pressure vessel. They are widely used for brackish and seawater supply applications. Hollow fiber modules exhibit a low flux rate (permeate flow per unit membrane per unit time) and foul easily, but... [Pg.363]

The authors provide selection criteria, by which the suitability of a process for a distributed production can be assessed [139]. These are explicitly given for the categories of feedstock, processes, customer products, and waste products. This is completed by a list of suitable device types for distributed production such as plate heat exchangers, pressure and temperature swing units, electrostatic dispersers, and membrane units. The various operations often rely on the use of electricity and therefore are said to be particularly suited for operation at the mini scale. [Pg.60]

Much more simply, the same result can be attained with bipolar membranes, membranes consisting of an anion- and cation-permeable (an anion- and cation-exchange) membrane laminated together. At such a membrane, when mounted between electrodes so that the cation-exchange layer faces the anode, water is split into and OH ions so that the acidic and alkaline solutions required for regeneration as above are produced at the respective surfaces of the bipolar membrane. When such membranes are suitably integrated into the sequence of membranes in the electrodialysis unit above, gas evolution at the electrodes is not needed the acid-base pair is produced with about half the power. [Pg.455]

Thus, the rate of change for the cumulative mass of diffusant passing through a membrane per unit area, or the flux of diffusant, j, may be evaluated from the steady-state portion of the permeation profile of a drug, as shown in Eq. (3). If the donor concentration and the steady-state flux of diffusant are known, the permeability coefficient may be determined. [Pg.816]

Even though the usual catalytic converter of the exhaust of the standard drive train is omitted, there are also net increases in the chemical industry. The increased demand is for the expensive coating of the electrode-membrane unit (MEA) and the catalysts needed for gas preparation (reformer). [Pg.373]

Coverage of thermal, chemical, surface, and mechanical properties of inorganic membranes includes discussion of pore diameter, thickness, and membrane morphology. You ll gain valuable insights into membrane modification, as well as the design and operation of membrane filtration units. [Pg.150]

While the plant is in operation, but not producing water that is of the required quality, two additional discharge streams can be produced (Mauguin and Corsin 2005). This usually occurs during the startup of the plant. The first stream is the pretreated water which has not reached an acceptable quality to pass through the membrane unit. Its composition is largely similar to that of the feed, and if membrane processes are not used as pretreatment, its salinity should be the same as feed. The second stream is the permeate which has not yet reached the desired quality of the final water product. This stream will have a lower salinity than the feed, and should not contain great quantities of harmful chemicals. Both these streams should be safe for disposal in the concentrate stream. [Pg.23]

Co-location is not be suitable for all desalination plants. This process only becomes feasible if the volume of cooling water discharged from the power plant is at least three to four times greater than the capacity of the desalination plant (Voutchkov 2004). Furthermore, corrosion from power plant heat exchangers may elevate the levels of metal in the feed to the desalination plant, which may then damage the reverse osmosis membrane units (Voutchkov 2004). [Pg.38]

The adrenergic receptors have been purified and their genes cloned. They have seven membrane-spanning units, which are involved in binding the selective agonists and antagonists. [Pg.44]
