Medication dispensing machine

Automated dispensing machines have become common on nursing units in many hospitals. The nurse must enter a security code and a password into the dispensing device, along with the name of the patient and the name of the medication, before the machine will allow access to remove the medication. Other, more recently developed, uses include microwave oven parts, transparent pipelines, chemical plant pumps and coffee machine hot water dispensers. One exceptional use has been to produce, by an extrusion moulding process, very large rollers for textile finishing for use where cast nylons cannot meet the specification. Also of growing interest are medical equipment applications that may be repeatedly steam-sterilised at 134°C, filtration membranes and cartridges for ink-jet printers. 

Automated dispensing devices create several situations that can easily result in errors. While these machines are routinely restocked, the wrong drug still can be placed into the wrong bin during this process. Devices that have multiple medications in each drawer and/or that do not require pharmacist review of orders before access have drawbacks that are identical to the flaws in traditional floor-stock systems ... 

Automation introduces its own set of challenges. Dispensing accuracy can be increased by using a series of aufomafed sfeps, such as machine-read-able coding (bar codes). Aufomafion can inf reduce redundancies in a system, which exceed human ability to be accurate. However, blind acceptance of medications provided through automated systems violates a basic safety step. Medications ordered, dispensed, and administered through automated systems still require safety steps to assure that the process is intact and that the medication is correct. 

I think people will be able to insert a prescription in something like an automated teller machine. They ll also insert medical cards encoded with their personal medical history and their age, height, and weight. The machine will dispense their medication. 

To turn these micro machines into true microbots, current research is focusing on locomotion and sensing imaging systems. Possible uses for these microbots include smart pills, which could contain sensors or drug reservoirs (currently used in birth control). Tiny pumps, once inside the body, will dispense the proper amount of medication at precisely the correct site. These microbots are currently in production for the treatment of diabetes (to release insulin).
