Medications dispensing

Describe the various types of medication dispensing systems.

Riskprevention/mModijication. Pharmacy managers may not be able to eliminate a risk, but they can take steps to minimize the likelihood of its occurrence. All pharmacies take steps to avoid medication dispensing errors. This commonly involves the development of policies and procedures to prevent errors and improve patient safety (see Chapters 7 and 30).

Pharmacists should actively participate in the medication-use process, including, at a minimum, being available for consultation with prescrib-ers on medication ordering, interpretation, and review of medication orders, preparation of medications, dispensing of medications, and administration and monitoring of medications. 

Establish procedures for the distribution of medications to people that cannot come to the mass medication dispensing centers (a family member may be able to obtain medication for children at home or for an invalid family member). 

Similarly, although some states restrict electronic transmission of prescriptions, it is clear that this type of communication of prescriptions is increasing. Medication dispensing errors can be reduced with electronic prescription transmission. Several states have developed or are in the process of developing guidelines to ensure proper handling of electronic prescriptions. 

The focus of laboratory courses is to develop students skills in various areas of pharmacy practice. In labs, students practice dosage form preparation and administration, product selection, medication dispensing, patient counseling, physical assessment, and other components of delivering pharmaceutical care. Laboratory experiences may be components of didactic courses or may exist as stand-alone courses.

Alcohohc beverages are a famihar example. Normally we think of water as the solvent and ethyl alcohol as the solute. The proof of an alcohohc beverage is two times the concentration of alcohol. Thus, a 40-proof beverage is 20 percent alcohol and 80 percent water. A 100-proof beverage is 50 percent alcohol and 50 percent water. If the proof were greater than 100, that would mean there is more alcohol than water, so their roles as solute and solvent would be reversed—ethyl alcohol would become the solvent and water would be the solute. Many medications dispensed in liquid form are also examples of hquids dissolved in another liquid.
