The Swedish Classification Scheme initiated in 2005 by the Swedish Association of Pharmacy Industries (LIF), the Swedish Medical Products Agency, Apoteket (National Corporation of Swedish Pharmacies), the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions and the Stockholm County Council, take in account Persistence, Bioaccumulation and Toxicity (PBT) characteristics of pharmaceutical products. This voluntary scheme looks at the environmental hazard and the associated risk of pharmaceutical products. The environmental risk is calculated based on the ratio PEC/PNEC according to the EMEA guideline [17,124, 127]. The obtained information is only available on the website www.fss.se, since due to European restrictions it is not possible to include warning labels on the packaging of medications [17].

In Sweden, the Medical Products Agency (MPA) recently (Oct. 1990) issued its own discussion entitled, "Some Views from the Medical Products Agency on the Documentation for Chiral Durgs" (24). This request for discussion and comment covers four scenarios (1) new enantiomer (evaluate enantiomeric purity using a chiral assay also, address in vivo inversion if present, contralateral stereoisomer should be regarded as a metabolite) ...

Without going into more detail it should be pointed out that the NIP mirrors, both in its organization and responsibilities, its counterpart in the European medicines control agencies (the Medicines Control Agency [MCA] in the United Kingdom, the Medical Product Agency [MPA] in Sweden, the medicines part of the National Board of Health in Denmark, etc.).

There is a 2-year diploma course in pharmaceutical medicine given at the Karolinska Institute and the Medical Products Agency, Stockholm, organized for pharmaceutical physicians in conjunction with the Swedish Board of Pharmaceutical Medicine.

The Swedish Medical Products Agency received 7 case reports over the 1998 to 1999 period of patients stabilised on warfarin who showed decreased ESTRs when St John s wort was added. Their ESIRs fell from the normal therapeutic range of about 2 to 4 to about 1.5. Two patients needed warfarin dosage increases of 6.6% and 15% when St John s wort was added. The INRs of 4 of the patients returned to their former values when the St John s wort was stopped. ...

In order to learn more, and if possibly decrease environmental impacts through adjusted prescription patterns, the Research-based Pharmaceutical Industry in Sweden (LIE [20]) has developed an enviromnental classification scheme for pharmaceutical substances[21] The model for presenting environmental data was developed in collaboration with Stockholm County Council, the pharmacy chain Apoteket AB, the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SKL), and the Swedish Medical Products Agency MPA. The goal was to develop a model, which clearly shows environmental information, both to interested members of the public, to healthcare professionals and pharmacists. The environmental information draws on data from the pharmaceutical companies, often generated in the preparation phase...
