Maximum allowable working pressure valves

Manual Valve - Inadvertent operation of a block valve while the plant is onstream may expose equipment to a pressure that exceeds the maximum allowable working pressure. For the purpose of design, it is considered that only one manual valve is opened or closed and control devices are in their normal design position. A PR valve is required if the block valve is not locked or car sealed in the open position and if closure of such valve can result in overpressure. [Pg.136]

The code stipulates that when multiple valves are used, only one of them needs to be set at the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP). The additional valves can be set at up to 105% of the MAWP. Pilot-operated valves have a pilot valve combined with the main valve. The spring of the main valve provides 75 percent loading on the disk and the remaining 25 percent is offered by the gas or vapor through the pilot valve. When the vessel reaches the maximum allowable working pressure, the pilot valve relieves the gas pressure, which contributes to the disk load. Thus the safety valve becomes wide open. The pressure at which the valve is expected to open (set pressure) is usually selected as high as possible consistent with the effect of possible high pressure on die process as well as the containing vessel. Some reactions have a rapid increase in temperature when pressure increases, and this may fix the maximum allowable process pressure. In other situations the pressure rise above operating must be kept to some differential, and the safety valve must relieve at the peak value. A set pressure at the maximum value (whether maximum allowable working pressure of vessel, or other, but insuring protection to the weakest part of the system) requires the smallest valve. Consult manufacturers for set pressure compensation (valve related) for temperatures >200°F. [Pg.425]

Another example could be to do with high pressure in V-101. The vessel may reach its maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) say once in 10 years thus the frequency of this event is 0.1 year . If the relief valve on the vessel has a probability of failure on demand of one in 50, or 0.02, then the predicted failure rate for the vessel is 0.002 year , or once in 500 years. [Pg.40]

This type of installation has been shown to create a hazardous condition in the event that the rupture disk develops a pinhole leak that allows the pressure between the rupture disk and the relief valve to equilibrate with the process pressure. In order for the rupture disk to burst at its specified set pressure, the backpressure on the device needs to be low (typically atmospheric pressure). In the event of a pinhole leak, the rupture disk backpressure can rise until it reaches the equipment operating pressure, which effectively raises the burst pressure by a like amount. Depending on the set pressure of the rupture disk relative to the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) of the equipment, the equipment can be subjected to an overpressure that is unsafe. The typical layer of protection is to install a tell tale pressure gage between the rupture disk and the relief valve that is frequently monitored by operations. When pressure is noted, the rupture disk is replaced with a new one. [Pg.107]

The first, 1914 edition of the ASME Code did basic things like defining the term maximum allowable working pressure, and defining the minimum allowable distance between rows of rivets. The 1914 Code stipulated that the maximum allowable pressure on cast iron boiler headers should not exceed 160 psig (about 10 atmospheres or 10 bar). Minimum capacities for boiler pressure relief valves were defined. [Pg.108]

The function of a relief valve is to protect a vessel, piping system, or heat exchanger from exceeding its maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP). The MAWP is shown on the code stamp (a metal plate) attached to each process vessel, and by design is determined by the size of the impeller on the pump upstream of the vessel (see Sec. 34.4.1 in Chap. 34).
