The dominant processes are apparently sediment deposition, sediment burial, volatilization, and deposition with air particles (i.e. dry dustfall and scavenging by rain). It is believed that the concentrations and process rates may be broadly consistent with average conditions in Lake Michigan in the early 1970s. No claim is made that the model simulates Lake Michigan precisely since the Lake has complex heterogeneous water movement and sedimentation. But the general behavior is believed to be correct and, with adjustment of the parameters, a better fit could be obtained. [Pg.194]

The differences in the magnitudes of the parameters shown in Table 3.7 correspond well with the course of (anaerobic) microbial processes in the sewer deposits. Newly deposited sediments not only have the highest pollutant potential but also show the lowest critical shear stress for erosion. Such sediment types may exert the highest impacts on receiving waters from combined sewer overflows. [Pg.62]

The large sedimentary basins trend NW and contain extensive deposits. Sedimentation occurred from the Neo-Proterozoic to Mesozoic. The Dos Parecis Basin (Siqueira 1989 Pedreira Bahia 2000) is comprised of marine and... [Pg.259]

At the end of the fermentation the wine will be turbid and muddy from the suspended yeast cells and the debris from the fruit. Most of this material will settle quickly, forming a more or less thick layer in the bottom of the bottle. The new wine should be syphoned away from the deposited sediment promptly to avoid off flavors from autolysis of the yeast in the sediment. Also at this time wine acquires the defect of H2S which is produced by reduction of the elemental sulfur dust applied to the grapes as fungicide by the decomposing yeast cells in the thick layer of sediment. The first transfer of the new wine from the sediment should occur very soon after active fermentation, the second about two weeks later, and the third and possibly a fourth two to six months later. These rackings may be conducted under a blanket of nitrogen or carbon dioxide if the particular wine oxidizes easily. [Pg.297]

Placer deposit Sediments that contain significant concentrations of dense valuable minerals, such as gold or diamonds. Placers are usually stream deposits. [Pg.461]

Thermal stability (thermal instability) the ability (inability) of a liquid to withstand relatively high temperatures for short periods of time without the formation of carbonaceous deposits (sediment or coke). [Pg.456]

In less than an hour and a half, we pass over the last foothill of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and begin to drop down into the Central Valley. Straight ahead, fifty miles to the west is the Coast Range. Millions of years ago, erosion from these two parallel mountain ranges deposited sediments onto the floor of the valley that was once an inland sea, creating soil that is deep brown, loamy, and rich in nutrients. Today this fertile soil supports the most productive agricultural land in the world, supplying 25% of all the food produced in the United States. [Pg.107]

The four dominant processes controlling movement of sediments in estuaries are as follows (1) erosion of the bed (2) transportation (3) deposition and (4) consolidation of deposited sediments. [Pg.118]

Canuel, E.A., and Martens, C.S. (1993) Seasonal variation in the sources and alteration of organic matter associated with recently-deposited sediments. Org. Geochem. 20, 563-577. [Pg.558]

The soil is maintained and improved with organic compost and fertilisers which can be made from a range of materials including animal manures and waste products from the fermentation, which are usually composted and spread on the ground under the vines. Typical composting material includes yeast deposits, sediment, marc, vine leaves, prunings and straw. [Pg.161]

The amount of deposited sediment is determined by its height and, since the settled volume is not independent of size, eirors are introduced. [Pg.439]
