Marking pens

After purification, water should be stored in scrupulously cleaned glass containers to minimize metal ion contamination. If water or stock solutions are to be kept in plastic containers, then the containers should not be marked directly on the sides of the containers with marking pens commonly found in laboratories. Such commercial markers contain heavy metal ions which have been reported to permeate the walls of certain plastic containers. 

If paper cups are used, only the treated type should be employed as certain untreated cups can impart a "paper" or "cardboard" flavor to the juice. Treated cups will also maintain their integrity longer. Use of certain marking pens to mark the cups should be avoided if it is noted that the ink imparts a lingering solvent aroma. 

Use a waterproof marking pen or crayon to mark each leak as you proceed. 

Volumes submitted in hard copy form should be no more than 2 inches thick. As previously discussed, the front cover of each volume should have the proper information name of applicant, drug, and NDA number (if previously assigned), clearly written in waterproof marking pen or on typed, stick-on labels. Take one of the 3" pipe caps and drill a 3/8" hole in the center of the cap. The hole is the hydrogen gas exit port, and the cap will be the top of the electrolyzer. Center a 1 /16" pipe coupler inside the cap (see bottom photo at right), and use a fine tip marking pen to outline the coupler s outer circumference inside the PVC cap. If there are minor imperfections in the transfer ink representations of the electrodes, you can make corrections by filling in small missed spots with a fine tipped Sharpie marking pen.

The label should clearly identify the sample and any hazards associated with the sample. Many analytical laboratories have computer-based sample tracking systems that generate adhesive bar-coded labels for samples, exactly like the bar codes used on retail items in stores. On a balance, weigh 0.5 grams (0.5 mL) of water into a 3-mL conical vial. Select a short (5%-inch) Pasteur pipette and attach a rubber bulb. Squeeze the rubber bulb before inserting the tip of the pipette into the water. Try to control how much you depress the bulb, so that when the pipette is placed into the water and the bulb is completely released, only the desired amount of liquid is drawn into the pipette. (This skill may take some time to acquire, but it will facilitate your use of a Pasteur pipette.) When the water has been drawn up, place a mark with an indelible marking pen at the position of the meniscus. A more durable mark can be made by scoring the pipette with a file.
