Samples logged into the system are assigned a unique number which is often physically attached to the sample using a bar-code label. The testing protocol is contained in the LIMS and is based on the point in the process from which the sample was taken. This information and the identification of the type of sample enable the LIMS to schedule the testing of the material.

PEN is a good candidate for labels where temperature tolerance is required, such as multi-layer labels for automobile bodies when being painted and dried at high temperatures. PEN is ideally suited for bar code labels where dimensional stability and registration are required at elevated temperatures. PEN labels have dimensional-excellence performance on printed circuit boards, in solvent- and aqueous-based painting operations, and in under-the-hood applications. PEN labels also provide substantially improved performance over PET or vinyl labels when the label must survive in harsh chemical environments. PEN performs extremely well in applications where the label must be in contact with organic solvents, such as acetone, ethers, toluene and phenol, as well as strong bases (30 % NaOH) and moderate acids.

All essential identification information related to the sample is either printed on the sample vial s bar code label or exists within a look up table resident in controller memory. This approach avoids operator entry of this information through the computer keyboard and also facihtates implementation of a random order processing scheme.

I fully believe in health and safety and in educating my students to be professionals, but one thing that I have worried about for the past 15 years is the intrusion of regulatory health and safety into the laboratory. Buegelsdijk et al. described a fully automated system for preparation of dissolved Pu metal samples using the Zymate II (Zymark Corporation) laboratory robot.67 The sample preparation steps included bar-code label reading, weighing the sample, and transfer to the dissolution vessel.

The system used for creating the bar code labels, e.g., acquisition of number, conversion of number to bar code... 

Several tools capable of carrying such information can be used, such as alphanumeric descriptions, bar codes, labels, RFID tags or the freight documentation that accompanies the shipped goods. The use of these tools depends on cost and on the further use of the material.

In many laboratory information systems, electronic entry either in the laboratory or at a nursing station of a test order for a uniquely identified patient generates a specimen label bearing a unique laboratory accession number. A record is established that remains incomplete until a result (or set of results) is entered into the computer against the accession number. The unique label is affixed to the specimen collection container when the blood is drawn. Proper alignment of the label on the collection container is critical for subsequent specimen processing when using bar coded labels. Arrival of the specimen in the laboratory is recorded by a manual or computerized log-in procedure. A major advance in the automation of specimen identification in the clinical laboratory has been the incorporation of bar coding technology into analytical systems.In practice, a bar coded label (often generated by the laboratory information system and bearing the specimen accession number) is placed onto the specimen container and is subsequently read by one or more bar code readers that have been strategically placed at key positions in the analytical train. The resultant identifying and ancillary information is then transferred to and processed by the system software.
