Earlier editions of this book contained a rather extensive international directory of manufacturers and suppliers of standards, sample preparation supplies, and instruments and products for thin-layer chromatography. This type of information is now readily available on the internet world wide web through browsers such as Netscape, making the inclusion of a printed directory less important. Therefore, only a limited list of the major manufacturers and suppliers of analytical standards, sample preparation products, and TLC products and instruments, many of which we have dealt with in our research, is given below.

The revised database holds over 23 000 analyte values for 660 measurands and 1670 reference materials produced by 56 different producers, from 22 countries. The database is restricted to natural matrix materials (i.e. made from naturally occurring materials, excluding calibration standards manufactured from pure chemicals). Information has been extracted from the relevant certificates of analysis, information sheets, and other reports provided by the reference material producers. As a general rule, the authors have only included in the compilation reference materials for which a certificate of analysis or similar documentation is on file. Information included in the survey is on values for measurands determined in reference materials, producers, suppliers, the cost of the materials, the unit size supplied, and the recommended minimum weight of material for analysis, if available. The new searchable database has been designed to help analysts to select reference materials for quality assurance purposes that match as closely as possible, with respect to matrix type and concentrations of the measurands of interest and their samples to be analyzed see Table 8.3. 

There are many suppliers and manufacturers of PPE. Several factors should be evaluated before choosing a supplier. Those factors are the product s quality, whether the product meets the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) or the National Institute for Safety and Health s (NIOSH) standards, and availability and delivery of the PPE. Prior to choosing a supplier, test performance data should be requested and samples obtained for circulation among the workforce to get feedback from the actual users. The worst thing management can do is buy bulky or uncomfortable PPE that the workers will avoid wearing, especially when they know comfortable PPE is available. 

There must be high confidence that the routine quality standard of the items is high, and can be passed on the preliminary samples. This is often the case with incompany manufacture, or where suppliers have proven/validated and audited QC systems.
