Malignant melanoma soft-tissue sarcomas

TNF- has been extensively tested in the therapy of various malignancies, but results have been disappointing due to dose-limiting toxicities. One exception is the use of intra-arterial high-dose TNF- for malignant melanoma and soft tissue sarcoma of the extremities. In these settings, response rates greater than 80% have been noted. [Pg.1203]

The ability of melanoma to simulate the appearance of various soft tissue sarcomas is also well documented. These include malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, epithelioid angiosarcoma, rhabdoid tumors, osteosarcomas, and primitive neuroectodermal tumors, to name a few. The detailed immunophenotypic properties of those lesions are provided elsewhere in this book. However, none of them manifests reactivity for gplOO-related melanocytic markers or tyrosinase, making those markers essential to the differential diagnostic process. [Pg.199]

Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) was formerly thought to represent a primary soft tissue counterpart of cutaneous malignant melanoma. Nonetheless, it is now known that CCS exhibits a consistent and characteristic t(12 22) chromosomal translocation that is not shared by mela-nocytic lesions of the skin. This neoplasm is typified by an epithelioid and/or spindle cell constituency, with a delicate fibrovascular stroma and clear or lightly eosinophilic cytoplasm. Melanin pigmentation may or may not be observed. [Pg.113]
