However, a further study of 208 pregnant women on the Thai-Burmese border showed a significantly increased incidence of still-births compared with 1565 women treated with other antimalarial drugs (51). Other adverse effects were no more common than with other antimalarial drugs. The study was performed during a period of emerging mefloquine-resistant malaria, and the findings may also reflect the effect of suboptimal malaria treatment. 

Proguanil is one of the antimalarial drugs most widely used for prophylactic purposes, usually in combination with chloroquine or atovaquone in malaria prophylaxis, and with atovaquone in malaria treatment (SEDA-21, 297). A biguanide, it is rapidly absorbed in standard doses and mainly excreted by the kidneys. Its antimalarial effect is due to its metabolite cycloguanU. However, its metabolism varies individually, and this is reflected in a variable degree of efficacy (SEDA-17, 328). 

Deferoxamine is widely used for treatment of both acute iron intoxication and iron-overload anemia. Recently, it has been used in trials of malaria treatment.

Li et al. [48] described a virtual screen on the SPECS database to identify inhibitors for the cysteine protease falcipain-2 as promising target for malaria treatment. Finally, in 1944, Robert Woodward synthesized qxiinine from coal-tar derivatives, but the synthesis was not commercially viable. Chloroquine, a close chemical relative of quinine, did yield to synthesis and remains the mainstay of malaria treatment...
