Electrical apparatus, equipment and installations are tested to prove that they are safe and fit for purpose and that they comply with relevant standards, specifications and codes of practice. 

Electrical installations are usually tested on completion and before commissioning, but large installations may be tested and commissioned in sections as each part is completed. Subsequently, they need periodic retesting as part of the maintenance procedure to detect incipient faults and to prevent the development of fault combinations that may lead to danger. 

This chapter describes, firstly, the tests routinely carried out on low voltage installations and, secondly, the testing of apparatus and equipment, and the precautions against electrical injury that should be taken in test facilities. 

In the connections of conductors, strands are not cut back to accommodate one or more conductors in an inadequately sized terminal, there are no loose terminal screws and wiring insulation is not cut back too far. The conductors are of adequate size not only for current rating but also for voltage drop.
