Main character definition

In order to identify with the characters, we have to know who they are and how they ve arrived at the point where we join the story. A main character may be active or passive, young or old, male or female. These qualities should be specific and appropriate to the story it is no use telling a story about a passive Olympic athlete, because the drive to become an Olympic athlete requires, by definition, a forceful rather than passive character. Specificity about culture, family, and career is also helpful in creating a person we recognize. [Pg.90]

Failure of the various components of gas mains can cause changes of the parameters of pipeline system drastically. Therefore it is necessary to define the probability of their state that demands the definition of the characteristics of the reliability of composite elements. Following the character, the quantity and nature of failure of the specified elements the gas main may turn into various states. Transition from one state to another occurs under the influence of sequential failures and the restorations of these elements. [Pg.397]

Time-resolved CIDEP and optical emission studies provide further definitive characterization of the triplet and excited singlet states followed by their primary photochemical reactions producing transient radicals in individual mechanistic steps in the photolysis of a-guaiacoxylacetoveratrone. Both fluorescence and phosphorescence are observed and CIDEP measurements confirm the mainly n,n character of the lowest triplet state. The results indicate a photo triplet mechanism involving the formation of the ketyl radical prior to the P-ether cleavage to form phenacyl radicals and phenols. Indirect evidence of excited singlet photo decomposition mechanism is observed in the photolysis at 77 K. [Pg.99]

The influence of solvents on the ionization equilibrium is related to their electrostatic and their solvation properties. The value of the ionization constant of an analyte is closely determined, in practice, by the pH scale in the particular solvent. It is clear that it is most desirable to have a universal scale which is able to describe acidity (and basicity) in a way that is generally valid for all solvents. It is, in principle, not the definition of an acidity scale in theory which complicates the problem it is the difficulty of approximating the measured values in practice to the specifications of the definition. The pH scale, as is common in water, is applicable only to some organic solvents (i.e., mainly those for which the solvated proton activity is compatible with the Brpnsted theory of acidity). The applicability of an analog to the pH scale in water decreases with decreasing relative permittivity of the solvents and with their increasing aprotic character. [Pg.841]

The energy shift of the main line [by definition, the main line corresponds to the eigenfunction that has the largest perturbed basis function fractional character and is usually more intense than extra lines (see Section 6.2.1)] switches sign as one passes through this J-value. [Pg.296]
