Lymphoid Tumors. Lymphoid tumors, such as lymphomas or chronic lymphocytic leukemias, arise from less mature stages in B-lymphocyte development about one in five produce paraproteins, usually of the IgM class. 

Evidence from injection studies in animals corroborates the sensitivity of the immune system to radioactive strontium. In mice that have been injected with 89Sr or 90Sr to deplete bone marrow, natural killer cells are preferentially eliminated. The loss of this cell population results in a reduced ability to defend against lymphoid tumors. In similar injection studies, adverse effects have were also observed in the spleen and thymus.

Search for microsatellite instability in leukemia and lymphoma has revealed that this phenomenon is rare among hematological cancers, with the exception of lymphoid tumors in immunosuppressed patients and in lymphomas derived from mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (Fey, 1997), diseases which are both usually preceded by a benign B-cell hyperplasia state.

In this context, the consideration of mucosal-associated lymphoid tumors (AAALTs) should not be overlooked. Epidemiologic studies have concluded that H. pylori infection is the major cause of gastric cancer worldwide. The infection increases the risk of gastric adenocarcinoma by three to six times, probably by promoting the development of chronic atrophic gastritis. In addition, H. pylori increases the likelihood of the development of the primary non-Hodgkin s lymphoma AAALT by approximately sixfold. In the majority of circumstances, however, the eradication of H. pylori is associated with complete remission of this disease process.
