Dry lubricants are usually added to the powder in order to decrease the friction effects. The more common lubricants include zinc stearate [557-05-17, lithium stearate [4485-12-5] calcium stearate [1592-23-0] stearic acid [57-11-4] paraffin, graphite, and molybdenum disulfide [1317-33-5]. Lubricants are generally added to the powder in a dry state in amounts of 0.25—1.0 wt % of the metal powder. Some lubricants are added by drying and screening a slurry of powder and lubricant. Typically, solid stabilizers utilize natural saturated fatty acid ligands with chain lengths of Cg—Clg. Zinc stearate [557-05-1], zinc neodecanoate [27253-29-8], calcium stearate [1592-23-0], barium stearate [6865-35-6], and cadmium laurate [2605-44-9] are some examples. To complete the package, the solid products also contain other solid additives such as polyols, antioxidants, and lubricants. Liquid stabilizers can make use of metal soaps of oleic acid, tall oil acids, 2-ethyl-hexanoic acid, octylphenol, and nonylphenol. Barium bis(nonylphenate) [41157-58-8], zinc 2-ethylhexanoate [136-53-8], cadmium 2-ethylhexanoate [2420-98-6], and overbased barium tallate [68855-79-8] are normally used in the liquid formulations along with solubilizers such as plasticizers, phosphites, and/or epoxidized oils. The majority of the liquid barium—cadmium formulations rely on barium nonylphenate as the source of that metal. There are even some mixed metal stabilizers supplied as pastes. The U.S. FDA approved calcium—zinc stabilizers are good examples because they contain a mixture of calcium stearate and zinc stearate suspended in epoxidized soya oil. Printing on vinyl surfaces can be problematic due to the influence of the formulation ingredients, particularly heat stabilisers and lubricants, on print adhesion. Spectroscopic analysis of PVC-P films has identified the formation of a barium zinc stearate complex which formed in the PVC matrix and migrated to the surface (207). Polymeric plasticisers have been developed to increase the surface energy, and so improve print adhesion. Another consequence of the suggested chemical interaction between maleated polymers and zinc stearate is that the WPC material starts to decompose at lower temperatures (at about 300°C compared to 350°C) compared to that compounded without the metal-containing lubricant [25]. However, knowing that metal-containing compounds serve as catalysts of oxidation of plastics (see Chapter 15), the earlier plastic degradation could have occurred without any coupling agents, just due to the presence of zinc stearate. A simple test in that case would be to increase an amount of an antioxidant in the system, and the earlier decomposition temperature point would have predictably returned back to normal.
