James Dewey Watson (1928- ) was born in Chicago, Illinois, and enrolled in the University of Chicago at age 15. He received his Ph.D. in 1950 at the Unwersity of Indiana and then worked at Cambridge University in England from 1951 to 1953, where he and Francis Crick deduced the structure of DNA. After more than 20 years as professor at Harvard University, he moved in 1976 to the Laboratory of Quantitative Biology at Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, New York. He shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in medicine for his work on nucleic acids.

In a 1979-1980 Long Island, New York monitoring study. Diamond Shamrock Corp. found DCPA residues (parent + monoacld + dlacld) In 6 wells out of about 10 sampled In an agricultural area In Suffolk County, New York. (71). Typical positives were 40-600 ppb and sampling was conducted monthly over a one-year period. 

DCP has been found In ground water In about 3 Maryland wells (7 ), about 30 Long Island, New York wells (37), and over 60 California wells (89) at levels typically ranging between 1 ppb and 50 ppb. Soil core data from California showed that DCP was detected as far as 7 m down at 0.2-2,2 ppb (89). 

Dlnoseb has been found In Long Island, New York, In 6 wells out of 66 sampled, at levels of 4.5 ppb and less (93). 

A continuous, dynamic, one-dlmenslonal model called the Pesticide Root Zone Model or PRZM, has been developed recently by EPA/ORD In Athens, Georgia (110). PRZM allows for varying hydrologic and chemical properties by soil horizon. Weather data for water flow modeling Is obtained from dally precipitation records of the National Weather Service. It has been successfully validated with atrazlne field data from Watklns-vllle, Georgia and aldlcarb data from Long Island, New York for depths less than 3 meters.

A native of Long Island, New York, Timothy P. Meagher received his B.A. from SUNY Potsdam, Potsdam, New York, in 1981. Following a brief stint in industry, he earned his Ph.D. at Ohio State University in 1988. He joined the research department at Reilly Industries, Inc. in 1988. During his tenure there he worked in the area of pyridine chemistry. In particular, projects involved gas phase synthesis, ammoxidation, chlorination, and hydrogenation of pyridine compounds. Publications include contribution to Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds II and a patent on hydrogenation of 2-ethanol pyridine. He left Reilly Industries, Inc. in 2001 and is currently a consultant for TEKA Consulting.
