The writer also has investigated the reliability of the determination of pH by means of indicator papers. These results will be summarized briefly. Contrary to the directions of Haas, the drop should not be permitted to dry. The color of the dried paper is not so distinct, and small differences may be overlooked. Instead of a glass rod, it is better to use a capillary tube in transporting the liquid to the paper. By so doing, 10-20 mm. will be sufficient for a determination. Hardened paper is best as a rule. The liquid was applied and dried on cellulose filter (diameter 25 mm). In the present work as an analytical signal we took the relative intensity of analytical lines. This approach reduces non-homogeneity and inequality of a probe. Influence of filter type and sample mass on features of the procedure was studied. The dependence of analytical lines intensity from probe mass was linear for most of above listed elements except Ca presented in most types of filter paper. The relative intensities (reduced to one of the analysis element) was constant or dependent from mass was weak in determined limits. This fact allows to exclude mass control in sample pretreatment. For Ca this dependence was non-linear, therefore, it is necessary to correct analytical signal. Analysis of thin layer is characterized by minimal influence of elements hence, the relative intensity explicitly determines the relative concentration. The sampling of solution for activity measurement is carried out by filtration with 0.22 pm Millex filter (Millipore Co.) which is encapsuled and attached to a syringe for handy operation. The randomly selected filtrates are further passed through Amicon Centriflo membrane filter (CF-25) of 2 nm pore size. The activities measured for the filtrates from the two different pore sizes are observed to be identical within experimental error. Activities are measured by a liquid scintillation counter. For each sample solution, triplicate samplings and activity measurements are undertaken and the average of three values is used for calculation. Absorption spectra of experimental solutions are measured using a Beckman UV 5260 spectrophotometer for the analysis of oxidation states of dissolved Pu ions. [Pg.317]
