Linear poly sulfones

The polysulfones are made by condensation polymerization of the potassium salt of bisphenol-A with dichlorodiphenyl sulfone, as discussed by S. R. Schulze and A. L. Baron. The polysulfonates are made from bisphenol-A and disulfonyl chlorides. They are more brittle than poly-sulfone and have been suggested by R. J. Schlott and co-workers to be used in coplymers with linear polyesters to improve the hydrolytic stability of the latter.

Of the GRTP only ABS, polypropylene, poly-sulfone, and modified phenylene oxide are electroplated. Of these ABS represents about 85% of the market. Since the introduction of platable plastics, new formulations have been developed to give superior physical properties, platability, and appearance. For example, 25% glass-filled ABS has a shrinkage nearly equal to that of die-cast metals the increased stiffness reduces distortion during the plating operation and a reduction of 50% in the coefficient of linear thermal expansion permits it to pass the standard thermal cycling test of 82 to -40 C (190 to - 40 F) (Ref. 29). 

Osano et al. [162] reported the synthesis of hybrid linear-dendritic ABA -type architectures, where A and B were hb poly(ether ketone)s and linear poly(ether sulfone)s, respectively. They prepared an AB2 monomer [3,5-bis(4 -fluorobenzoyl) phenol] to construct the hb segments, in an attempt to provide better control of the resultant hb structures than by utilizing the A2 + B3 approach. The monomer combination of linear block and AB2 monomer for the formation of ABA-type architecture are shown in Table 4, entry 4. Unreacted terminal groups of the ABA polymers were capped by teri-butylphenol and sodium 4-hydroxybenzene sulfonate. Such a flexible approach could allow different functional groups on the polymer chain ends simply by replacing the functional group on the phenol in the last part of the synthesis.

In a related application, polyelectrolyte microgels based on crosslinked cationic poly(allyl amine) and anionic polyfmethacrylic acid-co-epoxypropyl methacrylate) were studied by potentiometry, conductometry and turbidimetry [349]. In their neutralized (salt) form, the microgels fully complexed with linear polyelectrolytes (poly(acrylic acid), poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide), and polystyrene sulfonate)) as if the gels were themselves linear. However, if an acid/base reaction occurs between the linear polymers and the gels, it appears that only the surfaces of the gels form complexes. Previous work has addressed the fundamental characteristics of these complexes [350, 351] and has shown preferential complexation of cationic polyelectrolytes with crosslinked car-boxymethyl cellulose versus linear CMC [350], The departure from the 1 1 stoichiometry with the non-neutralized microgels may be due to the collapsed nature of these networks which prevents penetration of water soluble polyelectrolyte.
