Non-linear blocks

Floudas and coworkers [90] employed dielectric spectroscopy to probe the interfacial width in lamellae forming non-linear block copolymers of the type (B-h-A)3B and (B-h-A)3B(A-h-B)3, where A is PI and B is PS. Their experiments were conducted at temperatures below the ODT and below the glass transition of the PS hard phase . In this temperature region the global chain dynamics of PI bridges were used to provide an estimate of the dynamic interface between... [Pg.121]

Advancements in synthetic polymer chemistry have allowed a remarkable range of new nonlinear block copolymer architectures to be synthesized. The result is a wide variety of new materials with the capacity to form self-assembled phases in bulk and in solution. At present our synthetic capabilities exceed our understanding, both theoretical and experimental, of the properties of such macro-molecular systems. We anticipate that a better understanding of structure-property relationships for these materials will lead to impressive new polymers with applications such as structural plastics, elastomers, membranes, controlled release agents, compatibilizers, and surface active agents. From the synthetic standpoint it seems likely that recent advances in living free radical polymerization will make the syntheses of many non-linear block copolymers more commercially appealing. [Pg.129]

Disconnection of non-building-block rings which are embedded in a skeleton and also centrally located, either by breaking one bond or a pair of bonds. The one-bond disconnections which are of value are (a) bonds between C and N, O or S and (b) bonds leading to a totally symmetrical, locally symmetrical, or linear skeleton. The bond-pair disconnections which are most effective in simplification are those which generate two structures of roughly equal complexity. [Pg.39]

Non-linear PCA can be obtained in many different ways. Some methods make use of higher order terms of the data (e.g. squares, cross-products), non-linear transformations (e.g. logarithms), metrics that differ from the usual Euclidean one (e.g. city-block distance) or specialized applications of neural networks [50]. The objective of these methods is to increase the amount of variance in the data that is explained by the first two or three components of the analysis. We only provide a brief outline of the various approaches, with the exception of neural networks for which the reader is referred to Chapter 44. [Pg.149]

Abstract This review highlights recent (2000-2004) advances and developments regarding the synthesis of block copolymers with both linear [AB diblocks, ABA and ABC triblocks, ABCD tetrablocks, (AB)n multiblocks etc.] and non-linear structures (star-block, graft, miktoarm star, H-shaped, dendrimer-like and cyclic copolymers). Attention is given only to those synthetic methodologies which lead to well-defined and well-characterized macromolecules. [Pg.15]

PLS should have, in principle, rejected a portion of the non-linear variance resulting in a better, although not completely exact, fit to the data with just 1 factor. The PLS does tend to reject (exclude) those portions of the x-data which do not correlate linearly to the y-block. (Richard Kramer)... [Pg.153]

Many pollutants have extensive branching or functional groups which block or sterically hinder the pollutant carbon skeleton at the reactive site, that is, the site at which the substrate and enzyme come into contact during a transformation step. This can best be explained and illustrated by comparing the differences between linear (i. e., readily biodegradable) and non-linear (i. e., slowly biodegradable) alkylbenzenesulfonates (ABSs), i.e., the branching between them (Fig. 17). [Pg.361]

In naming non-linear copolymer molecules comprising linear subchains of the same monomeric units in a single type of skeletal structure, the italicized prefix for the skeletal structure is placed before the source-based name of the constituent linear subchains. In the case of star macromolecules with block copolymer arms, the block named first after the prefix emanates from the branch point. [Pg.388]

Regardless of whether symmetry is used to block diagonalize the mass-weighted Hessian, six (for non-linear molecules) or five (for linear species) of the eigenvalues will equal zero. The eigenvectors belonging to these zero eigenvalues describe the 3 translations and 2 or 3 rotations of the molecule. For example,... [Pg.261]

The dynamics of block copolymers melts are as intriguing as their thermodynamics leading to complex linear viscoelastic behaviour and anisotropic diffusion processes. The non-linear viscoelastic behaviour is even richer, and the study of the effect of external fields (shear, electric. ..) on the alignment and orientation of ordered structures in block copolymer melts is still in its infancy. Furthermore, these fields can influence the thermodynamics of block copolymer melts, as recent work has shown that phase transition lines shift depending on the applied shear. The theoretical understanding of dynamic processes in block copolymer melts is much less advanced than that for thermodynamics, and promises to be a particularly active area of research in the coming years. [Pg.6]

X = A + BIT, where A and B are constants). Thus S(q )should change linearly with 1/7. t his was indeed observed by Hashimoto etal. (1983b) at high temperatures however, at a temperature associated with the transition from the homogeneous disordered phase to the ordered phase, a deviation from linear behaviour was found. Such deviations are now ascribed to the effects of composition fluctuations (Bates et al. 1988 Lodge et al. 1996), and the crossover from linear to non-linear dependence of S(q ) on 1/7 does not correspond to the order disorder transition, rather the mean-field to non-mean-field transition (see Section 2.2.1 for block copolymer melts). [Pg.256]
