Lignins organic minerals

Cellulose is the most abundant of naturally occurring organic compounds for, as the chief constituent of the eell walls of higher plants, it comprises at least one-third of the vegetable matter of the world. The cellulose eontent of such vegetable matter varies from plant to plant. For example, oven-dried cotton contains about 90% cellulose, while an average wood has about 50%. The balance is composed of lignin, polysaccharides other than cellulose and minor amounts of resins, proteins and mineral matter. In spite of its wide distribution in nature, cellulose for chemical purposes is derived commerically from only two sources, cotton linters and wood pulp. [Pg.613]

Solid wood material is built up of two major organic polymers (macro molecules) (1) polysaccharides and (2) polyphenylpropane [61,62], The polysaccharides consist of two groups - cellulose and hemicellulose, and make up around 65-75 % of the wood on dry basis. The polyphenylpropanes are more commonly termed lignins and constitute around 18-35 % of the wood on dry basis. In Table 9 we can see that wood fuels consist of extractives, minerals, and nitrogen as well. Modem concretes often incorporate a mixture of chemical and mineral admixtures, each of which may interact with the various constituents of cements and influence cement hydration reactions. The admixture-cement interactions may in fact be viewed as the reaction between two complex chemical systems - the multicomponent, multiphasic inorganic materials in the cement and the organic compounds of multicomponent admixture systems. For example, lignosulfonate water-reducers are intrinsically complex mixtures of chemical compounds derived from the chemical degradation of lignin, while synthetic admixtures such as superplasticizers contain species with a broad distribution of molecular weights, reaction products, or other chemicals added for a specific purpose [125]. The mesomeric quinonemethides and 0-quinonemethides described above are somewhat more stable than the simple p-quinonemethides whose properties are already well known even from classical studies. The o-quinonemethides XX and XVII do not add on water even in solution in aqueous organic solvents their solution in dioxane/water is stable for months. They do not add on methanol or higher alcohols and react only slowly with phenols and organic acids. The addition of water is not catalyzed by mild alkalies the red color of the phenoxide ion (XVIII) prevails for weeks in soda solution. When considering biomass as a source of chemical feedstock, it is also important to remember that it is not a homogeneous organic structure. The carbohydrate structures of terrestrial plants are composed of both five-carbon and six-carbon sugar polymers. The lignin component, which binds the polymers together, is an aromatic polymer of nominally propyl-methoxyphenols. In addition, there are proteins and fatty acids/oils, as well as the trace biocomponents that incorporate much of the mineral content. Therefore, processing biomass to chemical products must take into consideration both its bulk chemical structure and its components. [Pg.808]
