Other Plastics Uses. The plasticizer range alcohols have a number of other uses in plastics hexanol and 2-ethylhexanol are used as part of the catalyst system in the polymerization of acrylates, ethylene, and propylene (55) the peroxydicarbonate of 2-ethylhexanol is utilized as a polymerization initiator for vinyl chloride various trialkyl phosphites find usage as heat and light stabHizers for plastics organotin derivatives are used as heat stabHizers for PVC octanol improves the compatibHity of calcium carbonate filler in various plastics 2-ethylhexanol is used to make expanded polystyrene beads (56) and acrylate esters serve as pressure sensitive adhesives. [Pg.450]

Mineral fillers are used for light-colored compounds. Talc has a small particle size and is a semireinforcing filler. It reduces air permeabihty and has htde effect on cure systems. Calcined clay is used for halobutyl stoppers in pharmaceutical appHcations. Nonreinforcing fillers, such as calcium carbonate and titanium dioxide, have large particle sizes and are added to reduce cost and viscosity. Hydrated siUcas give dry, stiff compounds, and their acidity reduces cure rate hence, their content should be minimized. [Pg.485]

Carbon blacks are usually used as fillers. The semi-reinforcing types, such as PEP (Past Extmsion Pumace) and SRE (Semi-Reinforcing Pumace) give the best performance (see Carbon, carbonblack). To lower the cost and improve the processibiUty of light compounds, or to lower the cost of black compounds, calcined clay or fine-particle calcium carbonate are used. [Pg.504]

For electrical insulation china clay is commonly employed whilst various calcium carbonates (whiting, ground limestone, precipitated calcium carbonate, and coated calcium carbonate) are used for general purpose work. Also occasionally employed are talc, light magnesium carbonate, barytes (barium sulphate) and the silicas and silicates. For flooring applications asbestos has been an important filler. The effect of fillers on some properties of plasticised PVC are shown in Figure 12.21 (a-d). [Pg.338]

Limestone. Limestone usually occurs as a white or light-shaded sedimentary monomineral formed by the consolidation of calcite (composed of calcium carbonate) sediments. It is a soft rock that can easily be cut and shaped into any size and form, so it has been used, since early antiquity, for... [Pg.80]

The basic constituent of seashells is calcium carbonate, an insoluble compound formed from calcium ions secreted from the cells of the shellfish and carbonate ions present in seawater. But calcium carbonate is a white solid. The colors of seashells often arise from impurities and metabolic waste products captured in the solid shell as it is formed. Coloration is dictated by both diet and water habitat. For example, some cowries that live and feed on soft corals take on the hue of the coral species. Yellow and red colors often arise from carotenoid pigments such as //-carotene. Light refraction often generates the iridescent mother-of-pearl hues. [Pg.51]

Clear liquid with a pungent odor similar to hydrochloric acid. Readily breaks down during storage often stabilized with water or calcium carbonate. Turns dark and forms resins on prolonged exposure to light. [Pg.414]

On the other hand, the alkoxide system presented several problems in formulation. The system first chosen as a model consisted of a trimethoxymethyl silane crosslinker, 8000 centistoke HEB siloxane, and a catalyst. A number of catalysts were used and each exhibited different cure rates and electrical properties. DuPont tetraalkoxytitante-Tyzor appears to he one of the better catalysts used in this type of curing system. Fillers are usually incorporated into the silicone formulation to improve mechanical properties, promote adhesion, and to serve as light screening and pigment agents. Cab-o-sil, a form of fumed silica, carbon-black, titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate are then used as RTV fillers. [Pg.178]

Side-chain bromination occurs under the influence of light (cf. Expt 6.28) and the extent of bromination is controlled by ensuring that the bromine (used in the theoretical amount) is added no faster than the rate at which it is consumed. The halogen in the benzylidene halide is reactive and hydrolysis occurs readily under mild conditions. In the example cited (p-bromobenzaldehyde, Expt 6.118) the use of a boiling aqueous suspension of calcium carbonate gives good results. [Pg.999]
