Light box

IP s have different parameters than x-ray films and so must be used in different ways. The system scanner-IP in the case at hand has a different characteristic curve. To make comparisons, one must have a conversion of the obtained grey scale values into the intensity values supplied by the film-light box system. 

Bright light therapy (i.e., the patient looking into a 10,000-lux intensity light box for about 30 min/day) may be used for patients with seasonal affective disorder and as adjunctive use for major depression. 

Light box. At the top of the device, towards the back, a box holds a fluorescent light bulb behind the thermometer. On the right side of this box are the fluorescent light switches. 

If the fluorescent light for the thermometer is not lit, press the red button at the right side of the light box and hold it down for a bit to start the lamp. The lamp should remain lit after you release the button. 

Press the black button on the right side of the light box and turn the fluorescent light off. 

Both the UV tests can be done in a UV light box, in a matter of seconds. Since most compounds are unchanged by exposure to UV, the test is considered nondestructive. Not everything will show up, but the procedure is good enough for most compounds. When using the lightbox, always turn it off when you leave it. If you don t, not only does the UV filter bum out, but your instructor becomes displeased. 

After the HPTLC plate has been developed, it is dried in the oven (as shown in Fig. 13.3) for approximately 30-60 min. The plate can then be viewed under a light box or Reprostar system as shown below in Fig. 13.5.

Items which are for use in the home, and have no use in the ordinary course of the practice of medicine or any other health profession, such as table mats, are unacceptable. Other examples of items which have been found unacceptable are neck cushions, plant seeds, road atlases and compact discs of music which were not considered relevant items and an x-ray light box and an age-sex register on grounds of costs.

Furthermore, concerns have been raised that St. John s wort and bright light may lead to the development of cataracts (Schey et ah, 2000). In this context, the combination of St. John s wort and light-box therapy in patients with seasonal affective disorder could be hazardous.

As an alternative to drying, gels may be photographed with a Polaroid or digital camera. Illumination should be provided by placing the gel on a light box. Gels may also be scanned with a transparency scanner. 

An additional visualization technique for PVDF membranes is transillumination, described by Reig and Klein (1988). In that technique, the membrane is dried at room temperature, then wet with 20% methanol and viewed on a white light box. Protein bands appear as clear areas. Sensitivity is usually comparable to that of Coomassie blue staining. 

Place the stained gel in a disposable Petri dish on a light box and cut out the spot/ band with a manual spot picker or a clean scalpel/razor blade, without taking any excess gel. 

Measure the latency to initial transition into the light box. Record the duration of time spent in each compartment, the number of transitions between them, and the distance traveled in each box.
