UV light boxes

Both the UV tests can be done in a UV light box, in a matter of seconds. Since most compounds are unchanged by exposure to UV, the test is considered nondestructive. Not everything will show up, but the procedure is good enough for most compounds. When using the lightbox, always turn it off when you leave it. If you don t, not only does the UV filter bum out, but your instructor becomes displeased. 

A crude but inexpensive alternative to the mask aligner is to physically clamp the substrate to the mask, then use a UV light box, which contains several black-light fluorescent tubes, for the exposure process. With care, this procedure can produce features in the vicinity of 5 ixm and larger, making it possible to fabricate 150 MHz SAW devices on quartz, for example. 

Fluorometers have also been adapted for semi-automatic measurements (Section 14.5.1.1.1). It is also possible to use UV-light boxes (Forghani et al., 1980) but they are much less precise. 

With a UV light box, the protein spots and bands of interest can be excised for mass spectrometric analysis.

Determine the integrity of the isolated RNA by denaturing agarose gel electrophoresis, followed by staining in ethidiiun bromide, and visualization on a UV light box. ... 

Visualize the bands on a UV light box, cover the screen with Saran Wrap to prevent nucleic add cross-contamination. 

View gel using Gel Doc or UV light box. Note - It is common to see an additional band lower on the gel representing an artifact of the PCR reaction that results from the primers overlapping one another and amplifying themselves.

CAUTION Ultraviolet light can damage your eyes and skin. Always wear protective clothing and UV safety glasses when using a UV light box. 

Pour the ethidium bromide solution back into its storage bottle. Pour enough vs ter into the staining tray to cover the gel. Wait 5 minutes. Pour the water out of the staining tray into a hazardous waste container and place the stained gel on a UV light box.
