These results encouraged the authors to attempt the synthesis of more-complex oligosaccharides, such as the Lex and Lea derivatives, 65 and 66, respectively. After formation of the (1 — 3)-fucosyl linkage, as promoted by HC104-Si02, in a stereo-and regio-selective manner, the peracetylated galactosyl trichloroacetimidate was added to afford the desired Lex derivative 65 in 62% yield. The same method was applied to obtain the Lea derivative 66 in 59% (Scheme 14).86... 

The nitration of sugars was also studied by Hlasiewetz and Pfaundler [4], Lea [5], Colley [6], Elliott [7], Ge [8], E. J. Hoffinan and Hawse [9], Pictet et cd. [10, 11], and a number of authors whose studies are mentioned later. The most noteworthy of the earlier results, mainly those of Will and Lenze [1], are collected in Table 109.

In both cases [36. 39J authors have excluded any possible leaching of the active catalytic species in solution by performing the Sheldon test 40). Moreover, the reusability of the catalyst for at lea.st three furtlier cycles was demonstrated simply by nitration, washing with diethyl ether or similar solvents, drying at room temperature under vacuum and immediately reusing. 

In Valencia, the usual punishment for homosexuality was burning at the stake. There was, however, some disinclination to inflict this penalty because these offenders .. . could not escape, as heretics could, by confession and conversion. In this connection it is interesting to note that homosexual clerics were treated more leniently than laymen exhibiting the same conduct. Many authorities. . . says Lea, held that clerics were not to be subjected to the rigor of the law for this offense, and it was common opinion that incorrigibility was required to justify the ordinary penality. ...

In careful examinations, Rhodes and Lea (1957) obtained the composition of phospholipids. Here, for the first time, lysophospholipids were shown to be natural components of egg lipids and not artifacts produced during sample preparation, as the authors explicitly point out. The PC fraction contains 0.9% plasmalogens the cephalin fraction contains 0.2% phosphatidylserines. Table 14.3 gives an overview of the composition of phospholipids in egg yolk. There is high agreement between the results of all individual authors. Only the results of Holopainen (1972) for sphingomyelins appear to be too high. 

The Act defines a local educational agency as (A) any LEA as defined in 5 14101 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, (B) the owner of any private, nonprofit elementary or secondary school building, and (C) the governing authority of any school operated under the defense dependents education system. 15 U.S.C. 2641(7). 

Under the AHERA ERP no penalties are assessed against LEAs for first time violations if they are relatively low level violations. Instead, Notices of Noncompliance, which do not carry penalties, are issued for these first time violations. Civil complaints can be issued if the LEA does not comply with a Notice of Noncompliance. For example, in In the Matter of Rose 6- Alex Pilibos, the EPA Region issued a default order penalizing the ovmers of a private school building because they had allegedly not submitted a management plan in accordance with the Notice of Noncomphance issued to them, and they did not respond to the EPA s complaint. Civil complaints may also be issued for subsequent violations and more serious first violations. The 1998 AHERA ERP amendments authorize penalties for first time violations if the LEA fails to inspect or reinspect using accredited contractors.
