Diethyl sulphate, b.p. 210° (decomp.), does not ordinarily react so vigor ously as dimethyl sulphate, but is nevertheless of great value for ethylations. It is somewhat leas poisonous than the methyl analogue, but the same pre cautions should be taken. Both sulphates should be stored in glass stoppered bottles sealed with paraffin wax, for they attack cork.

Further, peak overlap results in nonlinear detector response vs concentration. Therefore, some other detection method must be used in conjunction with either of these types of detection. Nevertheless, as can be seen from Figure Ilf, chiroptical detection can be advantageous if there is considerable overlap of the two peaks. In this case, chiroptical detection may reveal that the lea ding and tailing edges of the peak are enantiomerically enriched which may not be apparent from the chromatogram obtained with nonchiroptical detection (Fig. He). 

The derivatives are hydroxyethyl and hydroxypropyl cellulose. AH four derivatives find numerous appHcations and there are other reactants that can be added to ceUulose, including the mixed addition of reactants lea ding to adducts of commercial significance. In the commercial production of mixed ethers there are economic factors to consider that include the efficiency of adduct additions (ca 40%), waste product disposal, and the method of product recovery and drying on a commercial scale. The products produced by equation 2 require heat and produce NaCl, a corrosive by-product, with each mole of adduct added. These products are produced by a paste process and require corrosion-resistant production units. The oxirane additions (eq. 3) are exothermic, and with the explosive nature of the oxiranes, require a dispersion diluent in their synthesis (see Cellulose ethers). 

The major net exporters in the countries of the European Community (EC-12) are Italy and Spain. The United States only produces about 2% of the world s rice crop. However, because most of the world s rice is consumed within the borders of the producing countries (Asia produces and consumes about 90% of the world s rice), the United States, which exports approximately half of its production, is one of the lea ding rice exporting countries. 

In certain adsorbents, notably partially coked 2eohtes and some carbon molecular sieves, the resistance to mass transfer may be concentrated at the surface of the particle, lea ding to an uptake expression of the form... 

Coal is expected to be the best domestic feedstock alternative to natural gas. Although coal-based ammonia plants have been built elsewhere, there is no such plant in the United States. Pilot-scale projects have demonstrated effective ammonia-from-coal technology (102). The cost of ammonia production can be anticipated to increase, lea ding to increases in the cost of producing nitrogen fertilizers.
