The advent of a portable source of very high energy x-rays has opened up x-ray inspection possibilities in a wide range of environments. Applications include such fields as nuclear waste containers, bridges, nuclear and fossil power plants, surface and airborne transportation systems, space launch systems and other thick section NDT and other inspection problems that cannot be solved imaged using other NDT methods. 

Table 4 summarizes commercial and precommercial gas separation appHcations (86,87). The first large-scale commercial appHcation of gas separation was the separation of hydrogen from nitrogen ia ammonia purge gas streams. This process, launched ia 1980 by Monsanto, was followed by a number of similar appHcations, such as hydrogen—methane separation ia refinery off-gases and hydrogen—carbon monoxide adjustment ia oxo-chemical synthetic plants. 

In 1930, DuPont launched the synthetic fiber industry with the discovery of nylon-6,6.2 In 1938, a pilot plant for nylon-6,6 production was put into operation, and in 1939, production was commenced at a large-scale plant in Seaford, Delaware. The classical method for the synthesis of nylon-6,6 involves a two-step process. In the first step, hexamethylene diamine (HMDA) is reacted with adipic acid (AA) to form a nylon salt. Polymerization of the aqueous salt solution is carried out at temperatures in the range of about 210-275°C at a steam pressure of about 1.7 MPa. When 275°C is reached, the pressure is reduced to atmospheric pressure and heating is continued to drive the reaction to completion. 

It is reported here that DuPont is planning to launch a pilot plant in 2000, to test a new, patented process for chemically recycling nylon 6/6 resin. Full details are given of the process, called ammonolysis. 

Results from a pilot plant run by Toshiba, which recycles waste thermoplastics into fuel oil, have been sufficiently successful for the company to plan to launch commercial operations in the second half of the fiscal year, commencing in April, it is reported. Different pressures and temperatures during processing release oils with different compositions, and include heavy oil, kerosene and gasoline. Mixed waste can be processed without generating harmful gases, it is claimed. 

GM and Dow launched a joint project in 2004 for proving the viability of hydrogen fuel cells. In the first phase, a single GM test cell was connected to Dow s power distribution grid and also to Dow s hydrogen clean-up and pipeline system to generate electricity for the Dow chemical plant. Phase II expands the project from a single GM test cell to a multi-cell pilot plant at Dow s Texas Operations in Freeport, Texas. 

In 1665, Robert Hooke examined thin slices of cork under his very simple microscope and discovered small, box-like spaces which he named cells. A few years later the Italian anatomist Marcello Malpighi described similar structures in animal tissues, which he called vesicles or utricles and, in 1672, the English botanist Nehemiah Grew published two extensively illustrated volumes greatly extending Hooke s findings.
