Lasers Penning

To solve this problem, Maruo et al. [10] proposed a two-photon laser rapid prototyping technology, now known as two-photon photopolymerization. In this scheme the laser was directly focused inside a liquid resin droplet and it polymerized the focal point volume by TPA. This technology firstly eliminates the requirement of thin additive liquid film and controls the longitudinal spatial resolution by focal spot size itself, and secondly, it provides the capability of writing arbitrary 3D patterns within the droplet volume, as can be done in 3D laser writing in solid matrix only if the resin viscosity is reasonably high. From this sense, the laser focus functions as a real 3D laser pen. [Pg.196]

In order to record excitation spectra, the radical ions must first be thermalized to the electronic ground state, which happens automatically if they are created in condensed phase (e.g. in noble-gas matrices, see below). In the gas-phase experiments where ionization is effected by collision with excited argon atoms (Penning ionization), the unexcited argon atoms serve as a heat bath which may even be cooled to 77 K if desired. After thermalization, excitation spectra may be obtained by laser-induced fluorescence. [Pg.231]

Eukaryotic cells utilize an efficient transport system that delivers macromolecules fast and secure to their destination. In the case of the small GTP binding proteins of the Ras family the modified C-terminus seems to be sufficient for addressing the polypeptide to its target membrane (in the case of Ras itself the plasma membrane). Lipopeptides with the C-terminal structure of N-Ras (either a pen-tamer with a C-terminal carboxymethylation and farnesylation or a heptapeptide with a palmitoyl thioester in addition) and a N-terminal 7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-l,3-diazolyl (NBD) fluorophore were microin-jected into NIH3T3 fibroblast cells and the distribution of the fluorophore was monitored by confocal laser fluorescence microscopy. Enrichment of the protein in the plasma membrane was efficient only for peptides with two hydrophobic modification sites, while the farnesylated but not palmitoylated peptide was distributed in the cytosol.1121... [Pg.378]

Example Peptides often contain sulfur from cysteine. Provided there are at least two cysteines in the peptide molecule, the sulfur can be incorporated as thiol group (SH, reduced) or sulfur bridge (S-S, oxidized). Often, both forms are contained in the same sample. At ultrahigh-resolution, the contributions of these compositions to the same nominal m/z can be distinguished. The ultrahigh-resolution matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) FT-ICR mass spectrum of native and reduced [D-Pen jenkephalin gives an example of such a separation (Fig. 3.25). [39] The left expanded view shows fully resolved peaks due to and C2 isotopomers of the native and the all- C peak of the reduced compound at m/z 648. The right expansion reveals the peak of the native plus the... [Pg.105]

In emission spectroscopy the molecule or atom itself serves as the somce of light with discrete frequencies to be analyzed. In some cases, such as Exp. 39, which deals with the emission spectrum of molecular iodine vapor, excitation by a monochromatic or nearly monochromatic laser or mercury lamp is utilized. For other cases, such as the emission from N2 molecules, electron excitation of nitrogen in a discharge tube provides an intense somce whose spectrum is analyzed to extract information about the electronic and vibrational levels. Such low-pressure (p < 10 Torr) line somces are available with many elements, and lamps containing Hg, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe are often used for calibration purposes. The Pen-Ray pencil-type lamp is especially convenient for the visible and... [Pg.619]

The present summary will cover only those technologies where the drug formulation itself is used to penetrate the skin via its mechanical energy. It will not describe any technology where a needle is used to puncture the skin, even if the needle is not visible to the patient or only the epidermis is punctured, such as mini-needles, microneedles, pen injectors, or autoinjectors. Also excluded are systems that ablate the skin mechanically or otherwise disrupt its chemical or mechanical structure to increase its permeability, such as laser ablation, microdermal ablation, electroporation, or iontophoresis. These are usually referred to as transdermal drug delivery, but can also be described as needle free. [Pg.1209]
