Like the other alkali metals, cesium is a soft, silvery metal, but it appears golden if it has been exposed to small amounts of oxygen. It is not found in its metallic state in nature it is obtained as a byproduct of lithium processing of the mineral lepidolite. Its most significant ore is pollucite, and the world s largest pollucite deposit is found in Bernic Lake, Manitoba, Canada. Cesium s average crustal abundance is about 3 parts per million. Cesium is the most electropositive stable element and will ignite if exposed to air. Cesium burns blue in the flame test. [Pg.216]

The Tantalum Mining Corp. (TANGO) operates an underground spodumene mine and a concentrating plant at Bernic Lake, Manitoba, Canada. Tanco produces several grades of spodumene concentrates including a 7.25 wt.% Li O spodumene and two lithium-phosphate concentrates. [Pg.222]

FIGURE 4.3 Recent changes in concentrations of total mercury in axial muscle of walleyes from 13 boreal lakes in northwestern Ontario and Manitoba, Canada. Standardized concentrations for 50-cm walleye sampled during 1996-2000 are plotted against standardized concentrations for fish sampled during 1977-1983 (data are for reference lakes reported in Johnston et al. 2003). Each point below the diagonal line, which has a slope of 1.0, represents a lake where the standardized concentration declined between the 2 sampling intervals. [Pg.105]

Figure 6.10. Accumulation of C in non-steady-state soils of a mature black spruce/moss forest in central Manitoba, Canada. Data shown are (A) for sphagnum moss that has accumulated since the site last burned (-100 yr before sampling), and (B) for the humus and charred layer below the regrowing moss and including the A horizon. The soil is developed on the sediments of a lake that dried up -7000 years ago. The parameters 7 = plant input (kgCuf2yr ) and k = decomposition constant (yr-1). Reprinted from Trumbore and Harden (1997), with permission from the American Geophysical Union. Figure 6.10.
