Lab-on-chips

The need for improved sensor performance has led to the emergence of micro and nanofluidics. These fields seek to develop miniaturized analysis systems that combine the desired attributes in a compact and cost-effective setting. These platforms are commonly labeled as labs-on-chip or micro total analysis systems (pTAS)2, often using optical methods to realize a desired functionality. The preeminent role that optics play has recently led to the notion of optofluidics as an independent field that deals with devices and methods in which optics and fluidics enable each other3. Most of the initial lab-on-chip advances, however, occurred in the area of fluidics, while the optical components continued to consist largely of bulk components such as polarizers, filters, lenses, and objectives. [Pg.488]

With the introduction of modern electronics, inexpensive computers, and new materials there is a resurgence of voltammetric techniques in various branches of science as evident in hundreds of new publications. Now, voltammetry can be performed with a nano-electrode for the detection of single molecular events [1], similar electrodes can be used to monitor the activity of neurotransmitter in a single living cell in subnanoliter volume electrochemical cell [2], measurement of fast electron transfer kinetics, trace metal analysis, etc. Voltammetric sensors are now commonplace in gas sensors (home CO sensor), biomedical sensors (blood glucose meter), and detectors for liquid chromatography. Voltammetric sensors appear to be an ideal candidate for miniaturization and mass production. This is evident in the development of lab-on-chip... [Pg.662]

Until now, all in the literature proposed LAPS devices are complete autarkic measurement systems. Further applications can be found by the integration of LAPS devices into existing analytic fields. This requires the development of inexpensive integrated electronic units to operate the LAPS and to provide a standardised communication with higher process levels. The LAPS devices need to be easy in use to allow the operation in commercial environments. Due to the simple structure of the LAPS, the integration into micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), lab-on-chip and micro-total analysis systems (p-TAS) might be of special interest in the near future. [Pg.116]

The current trend towards miniaturization of functional systems and devices has driven the study of confinement effects (finite film thickness and the nature of the binding interfaces) on the fundamental physical properties of soft materials. Rapid developments of novel sensor and lab-on-chip technologies, and of polymer-based stimuli-responsive materials, raise the question of changes in solvent-polymer interactions under confinement. [Pg.55]

The technology for integrating different biosensors on a chip forms the basis for the lab on-chip which will require additional liquid handling and optionally active liquid treatment. Different approaches for a micro analytical system (pTAS) have been published [89] and are now an emerging field of research. [Pg.201]
