Preservatives that are often found in cosmetics include formaldehyde, quaternium-15, imidazolidinyl urea, diazo-lidinyl urea, parabens mix, 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazo-lin-3-one + 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (MCI/MI, Kathon CG), and methyldibromoglutaronitrile (MDBGN, Euxyl K400). Polyhexamethylenebiguanide, a biocide structurally related to hexamidine, is added to cosmetics as a preservative. 

Preservatives are often needed to prevent microbial and fungal growth in LDLDs. Preservatives commonly used are formaldehyde, gluteraldehyde, benzoic acid, Kathon , Dowicil , Bronopol , various esters of hydroxybenzoic acid, and others. 

The most commonly used preservatives that do not release formaldehyde are parabens, quatemium-15, and a mixture of chloromethyl isothiazolinone and methyl isothiazolinone (Kathon CG) [3,63,98,99],... 

Among the more commonly used preservatives that do not release formaldehyde are parabens—Dowicil 200 and Kathon CG. Kathon is effective at extremely low concentrations, about 15 ppm. A commonly used mixture of parabens consists of 0.1% methyl paraben and 0.7% propyl paraben. This mixture of parabens is moderately effective alone but is more effective in combination with other preservatives. The European Economic Community (EEC) prohibits the use of parabens above 0.8%. Parabens like most phenolic preservatives are deactivated by nonionic surfactants therefore, parabens should not be used in nonionic formulations like baby shampoos. 

Dowicil 22 has the Cosmetics Toiletries and Fragrance Association (CTFA) designation Quaternium-15 and is sometimes used between 0.05 and 0.2% and can be used in combination with parabens to enhance their preservative capacity. Kathon CG, a mixture of methyl chloroisothiazoli-none and methyl isothiazolinone, is another useful preservative for the preservation of cosmetic hair products.

Isothiazolones (Kathon CG/ICP) are highly effective and versatile preservatives, and are used to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi, including yeast and molds.

Formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers are used as preservatives in process solutions and for gelatine, and in stabilising baths for colour film and colour paper prints. Kathon CG and i,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one (BIT) may also be used as slimicides in process solutions and in stabilisers for colour paper prints (Ericson, personal communication).
