It is estimated that over 100,000 acres in Hawaii and some 250,000 acres in Louisiana each year are treated with herbicides, mostly 2,4-D and TCA (sodium salt of trichloroacetic acid), for pre- and postemergence weed control. Biologically, the most interesting aspect of (-)-dihydropyrenophorin is that it causes reddish lesions on Johnson grass at 10 6 10 7, and 10"8 M wherein no other plant species tested shows any sensitivity whatever at these concentrations. Thus, it would appear that VI is host selective. To our knowledge Johnson grass is not a host of D. avenae.

Moreover, the parts of many common flowering plants that are raised in homes and gardens can be lethal. And at certain times of the growing cycle, as noted, even ordinary forage can be harmful to livestock. Common ordinary Johnson grass can be a problem, as can growing alfalfa, which can be toxic early on. 

The sunflower is also an allelopathic plant, and a sunflower extract was found to inhibit the growth of such common weeds as jimsonweed, velvetleaf, johnson-grass, curly dock, red sorrel, ragweed, purslane, smartweed, wild mustard, and lamb s-quarter. (Creosote bush, or chaparral, may be the outstanding example of an allelopathic plant. No other plant can live next to or under a creosote bush.)... 

Trifluralin is a preemergence herbicide which must be incorporated into the soil because of its volatility (vapour pressure at 29.5°C is 1.99 10 mm Hg) and its sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. At application rates of O.S-1.0 kg active ingredient/ha it can be used selectively against annual grass weeds and several broad-leaved weed species in cotton, potatoes, sunflower, soybean, tomato, many vegetables and orchards. Applied in a double dose in two consecutive years, it kills the rhizomes of Johnson grass (Worther, 1974).
