Jatos

Some Paraplex resin mixts, such as Paraplex P-10 containing Paraplex resin AP-31 and styrene, are used by the Aerojet Engrg Corp, Azusa, Calif as an ingredient of JATO pro pints (see below). The same resin has been used as a constituent of resin-bonded expls (also, see below), while still other Paraplex resins are used to fabricate ceramic-faced composite armor (Ref 4) Refs 1) L.H, Eriksen, Study Stability and Sensitivity Characteristics of Paraplex Propellant ,PATR 1629 (1946) 2) E.T, Benning,... [Pg.489]

Paraplex Propallants. A series of JATO proplnts (the PF-series) developed by the Aerojet Engrg Corp, Azusa, Calif using Paraplex P-10 resin-styrene mixt as a fuel ingredient in the amt of approx 26.5%. Other ingredients are AN or K perchlorate, 73.0%, and small amts of t-butyl-hydroperoxide or benzoylperoxide, 0.1 to 0.5% (as a polymerization catalyst) (Ref 2)... [Pg.489]

Strands of this material would not burn in the inert atmosphere of the Crawford type bomb, but they burned in air at 70°F at the rate of 0.023" per second. This compared with a burning rate for H9 propellant of 0.097 /sec at 1 atm and 0.36"/sec,at 1000 psi 70°F This cast cellulose acetate material has been employed for end restricting 8W and 20" diameter perforated cast OGK grains and thermally cycled JATO motors at -65, +70, +165°F. No cracks or separations of the cast acetate restrictions were observed but some softening and deformation was noted. after conditioning at +165°F. These rounds functioned satisfactorily when fired at either -65 or +165°F... [Pg.368]

JATO. Abbreviation for Jet Assisted Take Off which refers to the use of an auxiliary rocket motor for added thrust in the take-off of an aircraft. The usual JATO units are solid propellants (Ref 2) ... [Pg.516]

However JATO units based on liq propellants have also been used for example the Tonka fuels used with white fuming nitric acid (Ref 1). Tonka fuels are mixtures of aniline, monomethylaniline, dime thylaniline,... [Pg.516]

Thomas (Ref 5) claims systems useful for propulsion of rocket shells, JATO airborne vehicles, consisting of a mixt of finely divided MeN03 with fuels which are nitro compds, such as NGu, Amm Picrate, etc. The addn of A1 can modify burning characteristics. Binders are. chlorinated polyphenyls or urea resins. The ingredients are milled on rolls just hot enough to soften the resin and then the mixt is pelleted... [Pg.522]

One of the main LP developments of the Jet Propulsion Lab efforts, later commercialized by Aerojet, was the nitric acid-aniline JATO engine. Monopropellant engines were also investigated... [Pg.594]

In the same connection it. is pointed out the inherent danger in the use of fuming nitric acid for laboratory nitrations. Aniline and such acid are used in some JATO units The action of alkalies on nitroparaffins may result in formation of intermediates, leading eventually to salts of fulminic acid There is also danger in handling of strong hydrogen peroxide, of its salts, and... [Pg.264]

Explosive Catapults are devices used for launching naval shipboard airplanes. Due to the lack of space aboard ships, it is impossible to have long enough runways to properly launch planes by ordinary means. Therefore, a catapult is used to impart sufficient initial velocity to the plane to launch it properly. Formerly, such catapults were operated by compressed air, but now expls are used. One method for launching planes is to fasten on the under side of the wings of a plane some rockets and then fire them at take-off time. This is now known as RATO (rocket-assisted take-off), but was formerly known as JATO (jet-assisted take-off)... [Pg.271]

The propellants have found an application in auxiliary or emergency power units (JATO—jet assisted take off) for use in aircraft, with good performance in the range of —75 to 180°F (i.e. —59 to 82°C). [Pg.389]

A test by dropping a loaded (but unfuzed) projectile, rocket, JATO or separate fuze from predetermined heights onto. a hard sur-face is usually conducted to determine if the proj can withstand, without damage, the setback force. Drop test is the nearest substitute for mote expensive and time consuming tests of actual firing the proj and is considered to be satisfactory (Ref 3, PP 96 103)... [Pg.445]
